Solidarity but I also can’t imagine going to work having such an adversarial relationship with your employer, and I used to work at REI

    I’d go work somewhere else

  2. Shame I have been a member for like 20 year and I have always loved they offer but I will no longer support REI or OR. If anything I will use them to try stuff on like packs, waste their time and not buy anything and just order it online.

Used to love rei, but I’ve heard way too much to support them.

Solidarity with the workers, here’s hoping the tactics work!

  4. Current wages for REI – As of May 2026, REI retail employee wages typically range from $15 to $24 per hour, with sales associates averaging $15–$20/hr and specialists $19–$24/hr.

Why these people want a boycott, even though it won’t affect any of them and the company has LOST $467.5 Million in ‘23-‘24. –

Lower Starting Wages: Starting pay rates for retail, distribution, and headquarters staff hired on or after July 1, 2026, will be reduced.

Current starting pay, often between ($15)–($20)/hour, is expected to decrease.

Reduced Employee Benefits: Changes include replacing guaranteed retirement contributions with a company-match model, slower vacation time accrual, and aligning sick time with state-mandated minimums rather than a uniform company policy.

Context of Financial Struggles: REI reported a net loss of $156.4 million in 2024 and $311.1 million in 2023.
Union Conflict: The move has intensified conflicts with unionized stores, with the union accusing REI of acting in bad faith during contract negotiations. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

    Impact on Workers
Union Response: The REI Union has announced a boycott of the 2026 Anniversary Sale.

„On the Climb“: Despite the cuts, CEO Mary Beth Laughton noted that some benefits, such as paid time off for outdoor activities, will remain unchanged, while promising a shift to quarterly performance-based pay for some roles. [1, 2, 3]

These changes apply to staff hired on or after July 1, 2026, impacting the company’s previously progressive reputation. [1, 2, 3]

It looks like this sale is a great time to stock up, because REI is probably going to have to downsize or get hollowed out by an equity firm.

Slave wage? they want to make a career out of working retail sales at an over priced „outdoor“ department store?

No problem. Their in store selection has been crap for the past 3-4 years. I used to go in and have to limit myself on outdoor gear spending. Now I can’t even find basic clothes I like.

I’m a proud union guy, and I’m all about fighting like hell for what laborers need.

However, outside looking in this doesn’t look like a situation anyone is going to win. REI is making bad moves, a bad CEO at the helm, and posting net loss after net loss. Even if the unions win a bit of their goals, doesn’t this feel like a bit of a sinking ship? Victory now to just be laid off when PE guts the company?

I’ll still be boycotting. It’s mostly because I can’t afford anything from REI in this economy, but ya know ✊
