      Does anyone know why North Carolina seems to have a relatively lower percentage than Virginia and South Carolina?

      I knew there were fewer slaves in the Appalachians because of the mountains, but even in the lower elevations NC has lower percentages than the surrounding states. I’m going to assume it’s something geographic not better morals.

      New Jersey still has about 20 „indentured servants“ in 1865. They were finally freed by the 13th amendment.
