Wahrer Unterschied der Sklavenarbeit, 1790-1865

Does anyone know why North Carolina seems to have a relatively lower percentage than Virginia and South Carolina?

I knew there were fewer slaves in the Appalachians because of the mountains, but even in the lower elevations NC has lower percentages than the surrounding states. I’m going to assume it’s something geographic not better morals.
