What a terrifying experience. Grizzly bears are MASSIVE

This is unusual behaviour. Most bears do not attack groups of four or more. Im guessing he was desperate – ill , old or just a poor hunter

The thing is that this kind of attack is rare. BC has about 15000 Grizzly bears which is not much if you look at how large the province of BC is. Average grizzly bears fatalities in all of north America is about 2-3 per year which is almost nothing. Dogs kill significantly more. Of course when something like this does happen it gets over sensationalized and people demand that we kill a significant part of the population. Imagine if a dog killed a kid at a local park and the government responded by killing 50% of all dogs in town.

This is very tragic. Apparently a teacher fought valiantly to protect the kids from the bear and was seriously injured. They had gone equipped with bear spray but it was not sufficient in this case. There was likely an aggravating factor here (they unknowingly happened on a kill, the bear was sick/injured, cubs in the area, etc). I hope that everyone involved recovers from their injuries, and the community is able to feel safe again soon.

Would a shotgun (with slugs) prevent the attack?

I stayed in Bella Coola for a summer back in 2014. that drive in was the scariest road I’ve been on.

I’m now wondering why they call it an attack from the wilderness by a wild animal and not the animal defending itself. It’s home defense.

We should be more worried about how this will affect the public’s perception of bears. Bears are peaceful berry pickers.

When we are out hiking I make sure my kids know that you don’t have to be fast than a bear, just gotta be faster than the people that you are with. Then I trip one, scream, and run. No idea as to why they have trust issues.

Those kids should not have made fun of the bald guy.
For non-Canadians, this occurred in a remote part of British Columbia…
