**Mckellen:**
> „He had heard about my work to establish Stonewall – a lobby group to present to the government and the world at large the case for treating UK lesbians and gays equally under the law with the rest of the population. He thought it somewhat unseemly for an actor to dabble in public or political affairs and advised me, sort of pleaded with me, to withdraw. Advice from an older generation, which I „didn’t follow.“
They more I learn about Alec they more I dislike him.
Weird how „apolitical“ people are always „apolitical“ in the same direction.
I don’t know the guy but Alec seems like a bit of a dick
He’s right it is unseemly but that doesn’t mean it shouldnt be done, it’s a bit uncomfy but it’s a good thing
„Latent bisexuality“. It’s amazing how very flimsy allegations and rumors are accepted as facts.
On this topic I agree with Ser Ian. But I do think people have too many political opinions about things they don’t know enough about and our hyper-individualistic western culture exacerbates these fractures in society and overvalues the value of such opinions and that this is unhealthy for society. Case in Point non-doctors spreading misinformation against vaccines during a pandemic or NIMBYs voting against renewables because it might damage the property value of their home (unlimited value growth forever right?).
doesn’t obi wan say this in revenge of the sith lmao
dead asf
It was a bad take to be sure, but I don’t know how I feel about a bunch of people who were born in this century going after a queer guy *born in 19 muthafucking 14* in this post. His lived experience was completely different from yours.
Guinness was bisexual. I think Ian knew that at the time too
I agree with Guinness, except for one part: Gay Rights fall under Human Rights, *not* “political affairs”
I understand the desire to be apolitical and just focus on your thing… but reality just doesn’t work like that.
Fuck Alec Guinness
I think it’s noteworthy that he said that over 50 years ago and was most likely feeling like he was trying to protect him…
I’d agree with this in a purely political aspect, their fame and fanbase allow them to unduly influence people in matters they largely have no real knowledge, take the damage done by jenny Mccarthy and her antivax stances at the height of the debate even before covid, as an example.
Socially though I think they can do a lot of good, especially being a part of or allies in gay communities or alternatives. They can’t actually harm anyone and homophobes aren’t going to be spending time around gay men willingly, this forces them to see them at the tiptop of society and realise their not some abstract numbers they can vote horrible policies against, but just fantastic actors living their lives and we can all get along.
I didn’t bother reading the full article, so I don’t know what perspective he was coming from, but thoughts are to pretty strongly disagree.
obi wan was he not
Obviously Alec Guinness is problematic.
The more I find out about Alec Guinness, the less I like him.
