A recent study conducted in Russia suggests that despite recent advances in aging research, DNA mutations in brain and heart cells might limit possible human lifespan to a maximum of 156 years.
The research team estimated human survival rates under the hypothetical scenario where aging causes like telomere shortening and protein damage are eliminated, leaving only somatic mutations. The analysis revealed that neurons and heart muscle cells were the primary barriers to longevity beyond age 156. These cells rarely divide or regenerate, making it difficult to replace damaged ones. As mutations cause individual cells to die, brain and heart functions could decline irreversibly over time.
In contrast, organs with high regenerative capacity, like the liver, were more resilient to mutations. Liver cells can be continuously replaced even after damage or death.
However, the study has limitations. It is a theoretical estimate based on mutation rates, cell counts, and organ dysfunction criteria in human tissues, not clinical trial data.

I don’t know why anyone wants to live longer than even 90 years. I’ve seen first hand through medical work how badly the body begins to deteriorate. No thanks. I’ll die at 80 in my sleep ( hopefully ) and be perfectly happy with that.

I mean, what does the really mean though? It seems to me that this is just another potential obstacle to overcome for life extension. Which, it is by far not the only one. I feel like this one is no more special. Now, if we solve all the other problems of aging and this particular one proves particularly hard to solve, maybe. But until then, we might solve this problem, before we solve the telomere one. Or any other number of problems. Or we may solve it at the same time. Not saying the study has no value, just saying that framing it as limiting „possible human lifespan to 156 years“ is kind of misleading. Because it makes it sound like no matter what science comes along, we can never live passed that. When the reality is that it’s just another in a line of many obstacles that have to be overcome to live longer.

I wish we would stop spending so much time and money on life extension instead of improving QOL as we age. Who wants to live forever unable to move or think or in copious amounts of pain? The limiting factor isn’t actually maximum life span right now. People usually die well before their potential from illnesses like cancer or dementia or strokes/heart attacks or even from depression and loneliness. IMO this is putting the cart before the horse.
