An interesting thing to note about the North West of England, is that it is more Catholic than other parts of the country at 15.4%. Only London is close at 14.8%. Places like the East Midlands are 4.8%. This is due a legacy of historic Irish immigration but also recusants being here. I wonder if that’s one reason people are more likely to identify with Christian? Cities like Liverpool and Manchester are proud of their Irish roots.

That is a fascinating set of charts. It’s a shame that there aren’t any further charts on Buddhism – just the numbers. One of the striking things for all the other religions is that almost all their adherents have origins in the country where the religion is strong. I suspect that might not be so much the case for Buddhism.

I wonder how “Christians” were identified. I’m British, and I was baptised into the Church of England. However, when I grew up, I realised that all religion was man-made, and now call myself an Atheist. I was never required to formally leave the CofE. We don’t have a register of Atheists. The only way I can see this data being obtained is by survey. But even then, this will be inaccurate. There are a sizeable number of people in the UK can call themselves Christian – but what they really mean is that they’re *culturally* Christian (as am I), but they might only ever go to Church at Christmas and Easter.

As an atheist, I’d be pleasantly surprised if it were the former, but I suspect it’s the latter.
