      *Waves in 0.5% Jewish*

„Ethnic composition“ is a bit of a personal preference since some pick ‚other white‘, some ‚White – British‘ – but it’s really how you self identify. I dunno how I could pick White British since my whole family (and extended family) all immigrated here about 110 years ago.

If we all work together, we can eradicate theism within our lifetime

Love being atheist. Glad we’re not an absolute minority in this country.

A big chunk of those putting down ‚Christian‘ on the census are likely either non-practicing, don’t care about religion, or just going with what they think of as the default.

      Slide 4: So there’s ‚White Brtish“, ‚Other Whites“ and … Irish?

Wonder how many of those atheists are actually agnostic.

Also, sad to see pastafarians under represented.

People seem to forget that a nation is supposed to exist not just in their lifetime, but for generations to come – therefore do the same map, but for under 18s only, let’s see the future

    9. Its interesting to me theres a 1,5% hindu population and a relatively large .75% sikh population. Im not familair with that specific piece of history but theres probably a good reason why more sikhs and more indians from sikh regions migrated to UK?

Kind of terrifying that half the country still believe the nonsense in the Bible.

An interesting thing to note about the North West of England, is that it is more Catholic than other parts of the country at 15.4%. Only London is close at 14.8%. Places like the East Midlands are 4.8%. This is due a legacy of historic Irish immigration but also recusants being here. I wonder if that’s one reason people are more likely to identify with Christian? Cities like Liverpool and Manchester are proud of their Irish roots.

    12. wait so muslims are not the dominant religion that the far right like to chat shit about

That is a fascinating set of charts. It’s a shame that there aren’t any further charts on Buddhism – just the numbers. One of the striking things for all the other religions is that almost all their adherents have origins in the country where the religion is strong. I suspect that might not be so much the case for Buddhism.

    14. Wait, I thought the most popular name was Mohammed and we were all doomed!!! 😱😱

    15. I was looking for the atheist comment saying those calling themselves Christians aren’t really Christian and I din’t have to scroll far. Let people identify how they want for goodness sake.

I hope I see atheists hit more than 50% in my lifetime; it’s time for humans to grow up and take responsibility for their actions.

I wish it would split the different denominations of Christianity, just to see how church of england compares to Catholicism

    18. I wonder how “Christians” were identified. I’m British, and I was baptised into the Church of England. However, when I grew up, I realised that all religion was man-made, and now call myself an Atheist. I was never required to formally leave the CofE. We don’t have a register of Atheists. The only way I can see this data being obtained is by survey. But even then, this will be inaccurate. There are a sizeable number of people in the UK can call themselves Christian – but what they really mean is that they’re *culturally* Christian (as am I), but they might only ever go to Church at Christmas and Easter.

Atheists will likely be the biggest group in the next census.

Politicians and media always think Islam is their enemy but it’s really people losing belief in Christianity.

Question: are the people classed as atheists all self-declared atheists, or does the figure include people who say they have no religion (but don’t necessarily regard themselves as atheists)?

As an atheist, I’d be pleasantly surprised if it were the former, but I suspect it’s the latter.

    21. HiddenPyromancer on

I’m a bit confused why its White British for Christians, but just British for Athiests when it came to the ethinc composition chart?

Remove the privileges that religions enjoy and watch those numbers…

But I thought the Muslims were taking over and becoming a super majority that was going to bring about Sharia Law if we didn’t vote Nigel /s

Redditurds acting like islamists are not a problem just because they are a minority. There is nothing more disengineous than a redditor

Don’t most Jews identify as ethnically Jewish, and typically have ancestors from Ashkenazi populations in central/Eastern Europe?

Ok im ready, let’s sort by “controversial”

I would be surprised if 10% of the people who put down Christian actually practice Christianity
