      I appreciate that SpaceX continues to find new milestones to stretch for while still sorting out how to safely take Starship orbital.

      Here’s hoping flight 13 is the last suborbital flight!

      There are over 10,800 Starline satellites in orbit right now.

      Their lifespan in orbit is about 5 years (5 to 5.3 is the median).

      If we just take a rough average, then over the next 5 years, over 2100 of the existing satellites will de-orbit per year.

      That is roughly 5.7 per day

      This post says a launch will put 20 satellites in orbit.

      That adds to the number of satellites that will de-oribt in around 5 years.

      And it is less than 4 days of de-orbiting of the 10,800 at this point.

      They need to keep launching all these partly because they can’t find other customers who want to put that much stuff in the orbits they are putting these because of the short lifespan in orbit.

      Waste of rare earth metals to be honest. It’s only going to get worse when more private companies start their own constellations. But I guess it’s much easier to sell “futuristic” space based telecommunications then proper wireless terrestrial solutions.

      The operation starlink v3s are being deployed to the same orbit starship is in, that is, *suborbital*. So they will only be very briefly „operational“ before re-entering with starship.
