Quick, someone say “if purchasing isn’t ownership then piracy isn’t theft” for upvotes.

Who would have thought that having a superior, user friendly digital marketplace would attract consumers. Something to think about.

The decision to not have physical media is pushing people to virtual media only platform. Ironic.

    4. Mr_master89 on

Sony is just gonna use this and say „see? People want digital more than physical!“

    5. It’s somewhat funny to frame the Sony discussions around Steam, the platform that was maybe THE core driver for the death of physical games and I personally didn’t mind it but amidst the outrage it is a bit ironic what reputation Steam has nowadays amongst gamers, especially if you consider that they were also a major force for the popularization of microtransactions etc.

Sure, leave the console market for steam, a digital only platform with an even more expensive piece of hardware as its “console alternative.”

    7. Lack of physical media is driving players to Steam with… no physical media?

    8. The mind blowing detail that doesn’t get mentioned here is being a PlayStation user comes with a £400+ upfront cost.

A steam user can be anyone from a household laptop to a £4k+ beast.

    9. I have a pc and a ps5, I was considering to plug my ps5 again to play Wolverine when it comes out. But after seeing Sony’s decision, fuck them. I ain’t plugging my ps5 in a long long time

    10. People mad about digital only sales moving to the platform that pioneered digital only sales? That will teach em!

    11. Relative_Act8366 on

I don’t think they’ll feel the downside to this decision till next gen. But they’ll def feel it

    12. Better question when did the PlayStation ever compete with Steam for overall users?

    13. Street_Grab4236 on

Steam has basically no barrier for entry compared to Playstation. You can install Steam on nearly any computer and anyone who plays a game on their computer will likely have Steam installed.

That also means you’re catching people who don’t really play video games much but want to play say Stardew Valley; they wouldn’t spend £500 on a Playstation for that but they would install Steam for free, pay like £10-15 for it and play it on an old laptop.

Sony haven’t lost a consumer to Valve in cases like that or very infrequent gamers who’ll play The Sims or something. I’d also be interested in how they deem an “active” user because I’ve not used Steam in years but it auto-launches on my MacBook when I boot it up every week or so, that may technically be considered “active”.

This headline seems to be a case of starting with a premise then finding data that vaguely sounds supportive of it rather than building a conclusion based on data.

Evil Steam monopoly /s, but Steam deserves this win when every other competitor just fancily self-destructs.

    15. Steam doesn’t have a history of taking back purchases from your library. Lots of people here forgetting that part of the story

In the future Steam Machine has the power to defeat traditional locked console ecosystem..

Buying from Steam, you’re renting the game, protesting PlayStation for the same thing.

    18. They pushed me there. After their crazy announcement I bought a gaming PC and started buying the games I’d normally play on PlayStation for Steam. Which I appreciate because I can run them better on my PC

    19. Interesting_reddevil on

Steam is basically the platform which drove the digital games adoption

    20. soupnight19 on

Sony spent years building a loyal player base and then speedran destroying it with PSN requirements, price hikes, and live service flops. Steam just had to exist and not be terrible.

    21. ButterscotchLow8950 on

I’m curious how many of these overlap? People like me who don’t care and are multi platform.

Am I on Steam, yup. For a couple of games to play with specific friends.

The majority of my gaming is done on PSN.

I also have an Xbox that rarely gets used.

I also have a switch 2, which I am delighted to report is pretty awesome and gets in the rotation.

Just because I am on Steam, doesn’t mean I’m leaving PlayStation.

    22. Forsaken-Broccoli921 on

I don’t get it? There is no correlation between these. One is a console platform and the other is PC.

    23. I started really utilizing the Steam store after I got my Steam Deck a couple years ago. After the latest announcement from Sony, I will be purchasing most of my games through Steam moving forward.

    24. I can buy CD keys from hundreds of key selling stores on PC.

On PlayStation you can buy from them or them and their prices are shit.

    25. i like steam, but even them need some limits. we need better laws to ensure our rights.

    26. bulletheads on

Backwards compatibility is gone. Might as well buy it on Steam. Ps5 will probably be my last console after 26 years with Sony.

    27. Any_Chemist3892 on

Pushed me that way. Always had a PC but kept my ps5 for convenience, then Sony just ruined the whole experience

    28. The core point is trust. People trust steam people don’t trust Sony which is 100% fair given they just removed movies you bought and the limited availability of the PSN account around the world.

The fact we need the government to step in and provide that trust in how things should function.

    29. It’s so goddamn clear the people making these decisions haven’t spent any time with the general public since COVID. They’re utterly detached from reality.

    30. Sony’s decision to end CD support on their console is pushing customers to a game retailer with no CD support? Hmmmm

    31. razormst3k1999 on

Sony really shat the bed this gen,ps5 has no games. Expect the ps6 to have even less besides more concords.
