It’s somewhat funny to frame the Sony discussions around Steam, the platform that was maybe THE core driver for the death of physical games and I personally didn’t mind it but amidst the outrage it is a bit ironic what reputation Steam has nowadays amongst gamers, especially if you consider that they were also a major force for the popularization of microtransactions etc.

Sure, leave the console market for steam, a digital only platform with an even more expensive piece of hardware as its “console alternative.”

The mind blowing detail that doesn’t get mentioned here is being a PlayStation user comes with a £400+ upfront cost.
A steam user can be anyone from a household laptop to a £4k+ beast.

Better question when did the PlayStation ever compete with Steam for overall users?
Street_Grab4236 on
Steam has basically no barrier for entry compared to Playstation. You can install Steam on nearly any computer and anyone who plays a game on their computer will likely have Steam installed.
That also means you’re catching people who don’t really play video games much but want to play say Stardew Valley; they wouldn’t spend £500 on a Playstation for that but they would install Steam for free, pay like £10-15 for it and play it on an old laptop.
Sony haven’t lost a consumer to Valve in cases like that or very infrequent gamers who’ll play The Sims or something. I’d also be interested in how they deem an “active” user because I’ve not used Steam in years but it auto-launches on my MacBook when I boot it up every week or so, that may technically be considered “active”.
This headline seems to be a case of starting with a premise then finding data that vaguely sounds supportive of it rather than building a conclusion based on data.

I’m curious how many of these overlap? People like me who don’t care and are multi platform.
Am I on Steam, yup. For a couple of games to play with specific friends.
The majority of my gaming is done on PSN.
I also have an Xbox that rarely gets used.
I also have a switch 2, which I am delighted to report is pretty awesome and gets in the rotation.
Just because I am on Steam, doesn’t mean I’m leaving PlayStation.

The core point is trust. People trust steam people don’t trust Sony which is 100% fair given they just removed movies you bought and the limited availability of the PSN account around the world.
The fact we need the government to step in and provide that trust in how things should function.
