Hallo r/politik – Zach Wahls hier.
Vielen Dank – AMA!

So, if we make it to 2029 with democracy still ‚in the game‘ if not ‚intact‘, what kinds of small-d democratic reforms do you think you’d support to restore the health of our democracy? As one such reform among many, where do you stand on filibuster abolition (or reform, at least)?
Wow, your wife sounds awesome. Is she, in fact, awesome?
What steps will you take to protect the state from Trump? Republicans have done a lot of damage the last 10 years so having a plan to repair the damage done by Trump/ Reynolds in Iowa would be appreciated.
What did you think of the[ Breaking Points coverage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqHUlITsCgk) of your race last week?
Good luck from Wisconsin!
Hey Senator Wahls, I’m an Iowan as well as a queer researcher who supports you in the primary right now. As someone who’s given a [TEDx talk about the importance for young folks to run](https://youtu.be/3uRZbUC9rqg?si=kBhdENBJgxs-VOVV), I appreciate the energy you’re bringing to the race. Can you talk about how you plan to campaign in the general election? A lot of folks are upset with the status quo, and you certainly feel like more of the „change“ candidate in this race. Can you talk about how you plan to capture that energy to propel yourself to office and why you’re a stronger candidate to make that case than Turek?
Do you support Medicare for All?
Cat, dog or Other?
A majority of the public run electric, water and sewer services were made possible by federal grants/loans. However, in an effort to keep prices low, many did not raise rates to keep a fund for a replacement of these facilities. Now the facilities are in need of replacement and so rate payers are experiencing large rate hikes. Will you propose or support a bill that provides some sort of federal funding to help defray these costs? Will the bill just be for the replacement of the current facilities, or will it have to have some „green“ portion of it like the IIJA bill had?
Could you talk about the Senator Boulton sexual harassment allegations? My Senator, who I really respect (Peterson), removed him from committees once the allegations came out. She also encouraged him to drop his bid for governor and resign. When you were minority leader, you elevated him back onto committees. I understand he probably had some expertise in those areas, but why did you and the party do a 180 in re-elevating an accused sexual harasser? It’s kind of a gross situation to me, so I’d love to hear a good explanation of your thinking.
The Democratic „brand“ (for lack of a better term) seems a little toxic in large parts of Iowa, and the country. What will you do, and what would you suggest your fellow Democrats do, to overcome the many stories we hear about a voter liking a candidate and his or her platform, but upon finding out that there is a D next to their name they recoil? Or why many Democratic policy ideas are hugely popular when presented in a vacuum, but somehow don’t translate to voter support on election day?
what’s your stance on all the pedophiles in the US government?
Zach, thank you for taking the time to do this AMA. Let me cut to the chase. I’ll be voting in the Dem primary in 5 days and some hours. Why am I voting for you over Josh Turek?
Question 1: How long do we rearrange the deck chairs before taking meaningful action on climate? Do any other issues truly matter if we make the planet uninhabitable?
Question 2: Will you vote to ban all weapons sales to Israel?
Hi Zach. I have 2 questions! Thank you in advance.
1. Please talk about cannabis legalization and what you can do for that at the federal level. Expungement?
2. Please talk about what plans you have to clean up Iowa water.
Joni Earnst, that shortsighted bitch deserved to be beaten in an open election, instead of quitting. She thought she was going to be with the in crowd of Republicans and “did a mean” and people found out how rotten she really is.
Sir I cannot vote for you but I wish upon wishes for you to win. Anyone that can replace that shit scab of a person will be a lot better.
We are at a turning point as a nation and need fresh leadership, including yourself, but also at the highest heights. That includes Congress. Going to the Senate, it’s expected you’d be under Chuck Schumer. Would you block another session of his leadership of the Senate party, and if so, have you given any thought to any sitting Senator you’d otherwise name to that position that can properly challenge Trump, his admin, SCOTUS, and the party of Trump? Very much connected to that, would you also back overturning the filibuster under a Dem president?
Hi, I watched your debate a few weeks ago and liked how you brought up monopolies and antitrust enforcement. You said (correct me if I’m wrong) that if the executive branch wasn’t willing to enforce these laws then congress should pass new laws to do so, and though I think that sounds great, I can’t imagine our congress doing so anytime soon, or our president actually signing them into law. Do you think I’m wrong in thinking that, or do you have any other plans on how to combat this issue?
Senator: First as someone who grew up in the 80s with a (relatively) un-closeted lesbian parent, thank you for stepping up back in 2011.
Back then it seemed like we were seeing the birth of a world where our GLBTQ+ friends, family, children, and neighbors could live in a society where they could be free to be themselves, love who they wanted and not be stigmatized. However, since then we’ve seen a regression with folks banning books for even mentioning GLBTQ families, trying again to ban gay marriage, and legalizing discrimination against our communities. What can we do to reverse these trends? How are you going to fight the hate?
Signed your Coralville neighbor and constituent.
Why do you believe you would be a stronger candidate than Josh Turek in this race? Regardless of who the nominee is in the race, what do you think a Democrat would need to do to win a state like Iowa, which Donald Trump carried by double digits in his 3 campaigns for President?
