If this actually happens then a lot of people are going to realize how much they relied on encrypted DMs without even thinking about it. Feels like every platform keeps moving backwards on privacy lately.

All those government secrets shared with escorts are about to go viral

  3. So it’s an end to end to end encryption.

Edit: thanks for the awards, i’d like to shove them all up Zuck. Meta has ZERO ethics. Fuck Meta.

    > Meta will potentially be able to see the contents of all messages between users on the social media platform

It’s not „potentially“, if it’s not encrypted they’ll be able to read everything. And they truly might read everything with AI models to train them or sell you ads in the future, if it’s not encrypted it could happen.

    > „Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,“

It’s so weird how they don’t opt-in by default on these things yet when it comes to garbage AI slop we’re all opted in wheter we want it or not

In March, a spokesperson for Meta told The Guardian that the decision to abandon encryption was due to low uptake. „Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,“ the spokesperson said. „Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.“

Just wow. Complete nonsense. Enabling encryption as default upon sign up has been standard for years now. What a choice move

Honestly anyone using any Meta products today and expecting privacy are out of their minds. Delete your Facebook and Instagram, stop using meta products if you care about this.

they literally forced me to set a pin for messenger a few months ago, so this seems dumb / move backwards

Who’d have ever thought a move like this would come from a company whose existence is based on users publicly sharing every minute detail of their lives?

It was never really end to end encrypted. They are just taking of the mask so they can openly train der model with their LLM, they have been doing it from they start. Now they just have a viable defense if it would come to lawsuit.

Not your keys – not your encryption

And a friendly reminder that WhatsApp doesn’t have E2E encryption either. Meta is just lying and saying that it does.

Remember, this company is built with your data. Literally everything they do is to profit off of information about you. They can see everything you do. Every post. Every search. Every purchase. Your location. The contents of every message you send. Every word you speak within rnage of an internet connected device. Everything. And all of it is being sold to other companies and given to governments (not just ours).

The only reason they would do this is to train AI on our messages. Do not expect your DMs to stay private….

  13. IG’s implementation of this was always poorly done. Basic messaging has never been encrypted, instead, you have the option within a DM conversation to turn on secret/encrypted mode but they only briefly advertised the function and otherwise don’t exactly make it obvious to access. Wouldn’t be surprised if they simply never actually wanted their users to use it and only deployed it as project to test functionality

  14. To not offer end to end encryption in any messaging platform is like taking away the write of people to wear clothes.

  15. Lol there is some irony about people who post every minute of their lives online voluntarily freaking out about messages being readable as well now.
Social media is already used for surveillance, it will just be a tiny bit better for surveillance fr9m this point on. For regular posters this will not make a huge difference

  16. **PSA: YOU ARE NOT THE CUSTOMER.**

    **YOU ARE THE PRODUCT.**

There’s no *maybe* about any of this. Facebork **definitely** will be reading the DMs to train its crappy AI and to serve ads.

    **Delete Instagram.**

    **Delete Facebook.**

Don’t be the monetary engine that enriches Mark Zuckerberg.

Who the fuck is sending messages on instagram anyway? I am not expecting privacy on any platform that has anything to do with Facebook.
