Not sure who is the bigger scumbag in this situation, the detectorist who’s holding out for a ridiculous payday (defo deserves something for it, but 3.5 mill?), or whoever might want to buy it just to hide it from the world in a private collection.

Edit: To all those saying ‚the state sets the price‘; you are all correct. That doesn’t mean that the detectorist has to accept the full price, it’s just what it’s valued at primarily for insurance purposes.

A part of British history is being held to ransom

Technically it isn’t worth anything. Any price is holding it to ransom.

  3. This is silly.

The older I get, the less time I have for this shit.

Someone found it. Give them a reward. Arbitrary sum that has be fundraised? Multiple multiple people faffing about with this? For a made-up number?

*What you do with it if it doesn’t go into a museum*

*What worth if sold to private and tucked away from almost all eyes? A hard-on because you are rich and special?*

*As I say to my children – can we not just share?*

    In conclusion: pathetic all round.

Off now to weep about humanity.

*edited because I clearly can’t spell

  4. Ugh I really hope this comes through! I made my donation, anyone else that is able to and has interest to should do the same!

  5. If I was getting that much I wouldn’t hold out for an extra £100k. That seems a bit harsh if it goes to private sale just over that.

It’s the British museum, they can afford to buy it today if they want to.

They are £100k away from raising as much money as they want to from their members, they are not £100k away from being able to buy the piece.
