Not sure who is the bigger scumbag in this situation, the detectorist who’s holding out for a ridiculous payday (defo deserves something for it, but 3.5 mill?), or whoever might want to buy it just to hide it from the world in a private collection.
Edit: To all those saying ‚the state sets the price‘; you are all correct. That doesn’t mean that the detectorist has to accept the full price, it’s just what it’s valued at primarily for insurance purposes.

Ugh I really hope this comes through! I made my donation, anyone else that is able to and has interest to should do the same!
If I was getting that much I wouldn’t hold out for an extra £100k. That seems a bit harsh if it goes to private sale just over that.
It’s the British museum, they can afford to buy it today if they want to.
They are £100k away from raising as much money as they want to from their members, they are not £100k away from being able to buy the piece.
