I see a generally positive relationship between more religious countries and higher percentages of people who believe that having children is a moral duty towards society.

I think the phrasing is difficult. Society clearly needs children to work in a long term. But that’s nothing that you can put on individual citizens.

I wouldn’t call it a moral duty. But certainly, if a country’s “native” population doesn’t procreate at replacement level, it will be replaced by one that does. And that country will in turn, become whatever the new majority wants. If Religious zealots of the world play the long game, they’ll have some solid, previously progressive real estate, in a couple of generations.

I assure you that in general high percentage countries are nevertheless doing jack squat to actually have more children.

The irony is Romania will do everything in its power to make you miserable if you have kids.
Restaurants charge rental fees for high chairs, there are no baby changing facilities anywhere, zero ramps anywhere for a pushchair, rarely will there be elevators either. Only recently did a few „soft play“ areas open. Public playgrounds are often 30+ years old with no repairs ever.

This is an incredibly hot take. Like 5 alarm tire fire hot take. I expect it is going to be deeply unpopular here. So here it goes.
If you live in any country with a government funded retirement and healthcare for the elderly, not having children is immoral. You are explicitly stating that other people’s children will be required to find your retirement and old age, as you have been required to find those ahead of you. *Expecting* someone else to take care of you is immoral. Even more so when the people who you will be expecting it from haven’t even been born yet.
To head off the one inevitable objection to this. It’s not immoral to expect society to take care of those who struggle, and it’s not immoral to advocate for such a society. There’s a fundamental difference between demanding/expecting society take care of you and saying we should live in a society that takes care of each other.
Edit: please don’t downvote the people who disagree with me. I want to encourage disagreement.

Feeling like it’s not a moral duty does not equal not wanting to have children. Younger women tend to want families in western countries, but they feel like they either can’t afford it (even with a partner) or they don’t want to give life to a child in a world which is going to shit

I’m not saying everyone should have children. There are tons of people that I hope will never have kids. However society needs them.
