Living in the Netherlands and the government building 10 extra cities because there is no housing I don’t feel like we need “more” of people.

That’s why Europe has similar birthrates when compared to east-asia…

    3. I see a generally positive relationship between more religious countries and higher percentages of people who believe that having children is a moral duty towards society.

It’s the first time I’ve heard of the notion that procreation is a moral duty, and I hail from a conservative european country.

    5. I think the phrasing is difficult. Society clearly needs children to work in a long term. But that’s nothing that you can put on individual citizens.

Interesting numbers on Bulgaria! Seemingly many out there to populate the motherland but conversely many of them emigrate abroad! Source: my partner is Bulgarian.

    7. I wouldn’t call it a moral duty. But certainly, if a country’s “native” population doesn’t procreate at replacement level, it will be replaced by one that does. And that country will in turn, become whatever the new majority wants. If Religious zealots of the world play the long game, they’ll have some solid, previously progressive real estate, in a couple of generations.

    8. I assure you that in general high percentage countries are nevertheless doing jack squat to actually have more children.

    9. The irony is Romania will do everything in its power to make you miserable if you have kids.

Restaurants charge rental fees for high chairs, there are no baby changing facilities anywhere, zero ramps anywhere for a pushchair, rarely will there be elevators either. Only recently did a few „soft play“ areas open. Public playgrounds are often 30+ years old with no repairs ever.

This is an incredibly hot take. Like 5 alarm tire fire hot take. I expect it is going to be deeply unpopular here. So here it goes.

If you live in any country with a government funded retirement and healthcare for the elderly, not having children is immoral. You are explicitly stating that other people’s children will be required to find your retirement and old age, as you have been required to find those ahead of you. *Expecting* someone else to take care of you is immoral. Even more so when the people who you will be expecting it from haven’t even been born yet.

To head off the one inevitable objection to this. It’s not immoral to expect society to take care of those who struggle, and it’s not immoral to advocate for such a society. There’s a fundamental difference between demanding/expecting society take care of you and saying we should live in a society that takes care of each other.

Edit: please don’t downvote the people who disagree with me. I want to encourage disagreement.

Feeling like it’s not a moral duty does not equal not wanting to have children. Younger women tend to want families in western countries, but they feel like they either can’t afford it (even with a partner) or they don’t want to give life to a child in a world which is going to shit

It’s very curious that many of the countries in red have the best birth rates LOL, while others like Poland or Lithuania have worse ones.

    14. I want to have several kids but no I don’t owe society children what the fuck. A citizen has many duties but there is no moral obligation to procreate.

    15. Well, we can certainly see which countries will make it into the 22nd century intact.

    16. Mundane_Scholar_5527 on

I personally think it’s immoral to have children in this trash world.

fuck growth, if my country can’t expand infrastructure fast enough to support its current population, why let my child suffer like that

    20. Blackopsman_21 on

So is this saying 8% of people disagree in Norway and that 92% agree? Despite the country being red? This seems like bullshit propaganda

    21. quoicoubebouh on

Imagine disagreeing with this 🤣 why MY children shall take care of YOU when YOU will need a doctor ? or assistant in nursing home ? TELL MY WHY

    22. Now ask western europe if its their duty to replace their population with millitary aged males from islamic countries.

Honestly would be amazing if England decided to remove itself from the gene pool

I mean society does need children. If starting from today no one is gonna have children we are all pretty much fucked and our life’s gonna get more miserable every year. I’d rather die early in such a scenario tbh.

I’m not saying everyone should have children. There are tons of people that I hope will never have kids. However society needs them.

    25. We were all cooked when we stopped relying on our own children for our old age and started relying on the government.

    26. penguinpolitician on

Logically, you can contribute to society in many ways other than having children, of course, but…if none of us have kids and society goes extinct then, kind of, what’s the point?

propaganda is working, the less testosterone men have, the more it works I guess
