I do not know if it would feel all too different because when you visit Spain, Italy, and France most people visit the large cities. It may appear different if you drive through them or take a train. But we have to keep in mind that interior Spain is pretty arid and has a desert called the Tabernas desert. France and Peninsular Italy are much more conducive to human activity so their populations are going to be more spread out.

      This area consists of about:

      • 192 millions people

      • in an area of around 1,582,000 km²

      • for an economy of around $8.5 Trillions.

    3. Yes, France has an empty diagonal that Italy lacks. The Apenines are tamer than the Massif Central, this also helps.

What’s going on in that area of southwest France near Bordeaux? Why is it so empty?

It looks to my untrained eyes as if Milano is more populated than Roma. Do Roma’s city limits extend out farther than those of Milano?
