I do not know if it would feel all too different because when you visit Spain, Italy, and France most people visit the large cities. It may appear different if you drive through them or take a train. But we have to keep in mind that interior Spain is pretty arid and has a desert called the Tabernas desert. France and Peninsular Italy are much more conducive to human activity so their populations are going to be more spread out.

Yes, France has an empty diagonal that Italy lacks. The Apenines are tamer than the Massif Central, this also helps.
