It seemed like some moderate Republicans and Democrats were on the verge of a compromise, and Trump throws in the „end the filibuster!1!!“ curveball. Has this derailed the possiblity of an off-ramp?
I’d like a refund on the taxes I paid this month please.
The poorest people in our country will start going without food and healthcare tomorrow.
That’s a sentence I never thought I’d have to type in my lifetime.
And it’s time to stop the blame game bullshit.
This lays at the feet of the GOP. They want to blame the other side for political points among their base instead of just doing their fucking job.
The funds are available for SNAP and they could negotiate the ACA subsidies over an evening if they’d stop acting like children.
Not about the shut down. But does anyone have recommendations for decent middle ground political news podcast? I want to hear all side but I’m also tired of the satirical commentary. Is there a podcast that gives a mix of different views?
no ones getting snap benefits by the looks of things and if trump scraps the filibuster afterwords to reopen the government and cut medicaid, medicare and social security after that so many people are going to be screwed
Friendly reminder;
Yes, they CAN end it with a simple majority. (

Republicans currently control all 3 branches of government, and can end the shutdown with a simple majority of 51, all by ending the filibuster. They are *choosing* not to, and letting Americans suffer as a result.
Additionally- Trump once said

„It always has to be the top. I mean, problems start from the top and they have to get solved from the top. And the president’s the leader and he’s got to get everybody in a room and he’s got to lead.“
As far as Democrats „caving“ I’m seeing that democratic leadership is waiting to see the results of Tuesdays elections before they make any decisions. They honestly have no clue on what direction they should take. The moderate wing wants to compromise and reopen now, but they’re concerned this would give ammo to left primary challengers. Early voting data is not giving them enough info to make a decision now. If Republicans over perform big races like the VA and NJ elections or the moderates squeak by with a less than expected performance then leadership is going to double down trying to appeal to republicans and follow the advice of their corporate advisors. If leftish candidates like Mamdani and Fateh way overperform in their big elections, leadership doesn’t have a solid plan.
Mamdani’s win in the mayoral primary was a real shock to leadership and the moderate wing and they have been „panicking“ since. This is why Schumer and the leadership circle have been working especially hard to fundraise for Cuomo and Frey, convince Janet Mills to run to defeat Graham Platner, and convince Scott Weiner to run to defeat Saikat Chakrabarti in case Pelosi decides to retire, etc down ballot across the country. Leadership and moderates are ready to compromise and reopen now to get people the money they need, but they’re worried about their actions further empowering the progressive wing in the party and jeopardizing their own seats. They need the election results to show them that people don’t like the progressives. Yes, there’s still a significant portion of the party that thinks Cuomo has an outside chance of winning.
That clip of Trump saying the president is responsible for a shutdown… why isn’t that being played on repeat?
It took only 10 ATC employees to call in sick last time to end the last shutdown. 10. Out of a total of over 11 thousand employees. Just 10.
Imagine being in a rare position to achieve great change and end a shutdown and not needing huge numbers to do it, and doing absolutely fuck all about it.
Come on, ATC. You didn’t start this shutdown, but you can sure as hell end it. Call in sick. Learn from history. We know it works, it literally worked the last time this situation happened. It’s up to you to come to that realization.

More media need to be hammering in Trump’s ,.past comments about shutdowns.
At this point, there might be a secondary goal in play where they force this to beat the old 35 day record (held by Trump) to get it to day 36 (during Trumps presidency) to use it for soundbites later on. This would also be a week in without SNAP and sticker shock.
Perhaps that is cynical of me, but we live in cynical times.
