The threat of mass firings came as the White House seeks to amplify pressure on Democrats ahead of next week’s funding deadline, and signal that President Donald Trump would take advantage of a shutdown to accelerate his priorities in the exact manner that Democratic lawmakers — including Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer — feared earlier this year.
Schumer in March argued for backing a GOP funding bill to keep the government open at the expense of angering his base. But with Democratic leaders vowing this time to hold steady on their demands, Trump officials are trying to shake that resolve by making clear the ways they would maximize the pain of a prolonged closure.

Republicans win either way. Their goal is to kill the government, which they are doing when it’s running and they can do when it shuts down. Maybe Dems can get a concession or two if they commit to a shutdown. I don’t imagine the concessions will be huge, but who knows.

Trump is intent on burning it all down. But he is corrupting every agency. Dems might want to consider allowing Trump to burn it all down, so that they can rebuild a democratic society.

„Democrats aren’t backing down.“ Of course they are. Chuck Schumer was asked repeatedly on CNN if he was prepared to shutdown the government if Trump doesn’t come to the negotiating table. He wouldn’t even answer the question. What’s going to happen is Democrats are going to cave and become even less popular among their constituents. All Chuck Schumer is worried about is how a shutdown will affect the insider trades he’s been making for decades on the stock market.

It isn’t the Democrat’s job to save America from itself. The voting public chose this and they should get precisely what they voted for. If they don’t like it they can always vote differently next time….assuming there is a next time.
