    1. By James Bickerton – US News Reporter:

Lindsey Halligan, the White House official leading a review of the Smithsonian Institution, argued you „can’t really talk about slavery honestly unless you talk about hope and progress“ during a Newsmax appearance on Wednesday.

Halligan, a special assistant to the president, said she had written to the Smithsonian „asking for more information regarding their exhibits“ after claiming the group’s museums had become „laboratories for political experiments.“

Nothing says hope and progress like *checks the quote again* slavery?

This is not a thought that should have been shared. Ever.

Der Reichstag says holocaust is being taught wrong, should not be so negative. Should focus more on positivity, how a substantial number of jews were liquidated.

Goebbels, the special assistant to Der Führer, says „Museums have become too political. The exhibitions are based on real history, which is terribly inconvenient for our agenda.“

    5. Well this is what happens when you outsource the Department of Education to PragerU.

I guess conservatives don’t hear how stupid they sound on this issue. Describing slavery as some sort of skills training and self improvement retreat is absolutely ridiculous. The denial runs deep.

    7. Every person who said current teachings of slavery being too negative should be turned into slaves for a few generations.  It wouldn’t be so bad if they don’t think it’s that bad, right?

Theres three things we need to be looked at harshly for always. Other things we can definitely debate

      1. US treatment of black people slavery/segregation

      2. US treatment of Native Americans/Indigenous people

      3. US treatment of Japanese Americans during WW2

We all said this back when Trump named his campaign “Make America Great Again”, we asked him to say when he thought it was great. Jim Crow? When women couldn’t vote? Back when you could own people? And I remember a lot of push back saying that was a bit extreme.

Well, here we are. Time to talk up the fun parts of slavery. I wonder how long it’ll be before we get a 4K re-release of Song of the South at the order of the White House.

They sold black slaves in the same way they sold farm equipment at auctions. They treated human beings like they would a tractor (probably worse considering). And they were willing to secede from the United States to continue to do so.

Republicans are trying to say this was normal and fine?

    12. cassettes_01 on

Imagine thinking you can speak like this and then go out into the country, unaffected.  This spokeswoman thinks she can say these things, go out to a restaurant, buys groceries, etc… without any pushback.

    14. That scene in 12 years a slave where they break the guys teeth to force feed him… really says it all about the violence needed to keep chattel slavery running.

Who can defend that in a good faith way? It’s not possible.

Also scares the hell out of me because that sh*t was happening with our constitution in place. That’s why a lot of Americans like myself want to be realistic about who we were, who we are and who we want to be.

    15. Sleeping_Echoes on

They have to justify it someway since they want to bring it back so they can justify the tariff and other crazy bullshit for that day.

    16. Accurate-Guava-3337 on

This is really slipping under the radar. Diminishing the history and teaching of slavery should be a nonstarter at the very least.

    17. shawn_overlord on

What is that even supposed to mean?? Like how are we supposed to reconcile our government is literally telling us to sanitize history? There’s no other way to interpret this kind of sentiment

Bigotry and ignorance infested this country long ago and the sickness is apparent in the symptoms; slavery was ‚good‘, being LGBT is ‚wrong‘, empathy is a ’sin‘, racism doesn’t ‚exist‘, all minorities are ‚criminals‘

The president is a literal demented boomer implementing Facebook-level old-people slop as policy

      >I think we need to be focusing on the progress that we’ve made then and we need to stop focusing so much on the lack of progress.

„Noooooo don’t talk about the lack of progress talk about the progress not the lack of it you guys stop talking about the lack of progress, we don’t actually torture you as much anymore, don’t look at the systemic racism we still do just look at how we used to be so much worse but don’t talk about that either, stop being so negative!“

    19. EscapedTheEcho on

I’ve said it before: in addition to wanting to repeal the 4th, 14th,19th, & 22nd, amendments, republicans are coming for the 13th next.

    20. DeltaFoxtrot144 on

why so they can try and bring it back in a couple years? Hard fucking pass. is he seriously out here doing a PR Image rehabilitation for fucking slavery? if he was a dog Kristy knobslooberNoem would have put him down by now

Fuck You all the way around WH.

Trump is racist, pedo, wannabe dictator who you all are worshipping as a god king in your cult.

He will go down in history as one of the worst presidents this hellhole ever conjured up.

      >Lindsey Halligan, the White House official leading a review of the Smithsonian Institution, said

      >Referring to slavery…“It’s not about whitewashing it’s about full context, so while slavery is obviously a horrible aspect of our nation’s history you can’t really talk about slavery honestly unless you also talk about hope and progress and I think we need to be focusing on the progress that we’ve made then and we need to stop focusing so much on the lack of progress.“

Much of the initial hope and progress came through fighting against Confederate generals in the Civil War, the same generals whom Trump wants to memorialize through statuary.

    23. SquashDue502 on

Yeah you can teach progress by showing progress. Show how black Americans now have equal opportunity and how reparations were made to them. Oh wait, we got rid of DEI and don’t believe reparations are possible. 💀

Absolutely disgusting rhetoric. Attempting to trick one into thinking a cancer is healthy for their body will not stop said cancer from killing them.

      Release the Goddamn Epstein files.

    25. How about the Tulsa Massacre and the Trail of Tears? Are we missing the fun parts?

    26. Yeah, it was good for the economy, kept unemployment low, school enrollment low, no one on welfare, no problems with desegregation, no EEO hires, the courts not clogged with claims of discrimination. It was a golden era for some.

    27. Queasy-Protection-50 on

This is bullshit and it’s wrong. Anyone who supports this is someone looking to openly be a racist.

    28. skeptolojist on

Meanwhile, Florida’s new African American history standards for public schools were defended by Governor Ron DeSantis. These standards, adopted in 2023, include a line stating that middle schoolers should be taught that “slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit”.  So you see, slavery was actually good for black people.

    31. Giving the overwhelming benefit of the doubt, at best they’re saying that the Smithsonian and curriculum covering Slavery should also cover the context around when Slavery was [partially] ended and how American culture [partially] advanced in ways that improved the lives and opportunities of POC to pursue Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

That’s an admirable goal, I think most could agree.

But… I’ve been to the Smithsonian, and I’ve been through public schooling. The Smithsonian **did** cover those topics, and I **did** learn about those things in school.

It just so happens that the evil of owning people, the fact that a civil war was fought over it, that politicians actively sought and still do to maintain the institution of slavery to this day, and that at no point was any step of „progress“ not tainted with some „gotcha“ that meant POC still were treated like second class citizens, overshadowed much of that.

    32. Cool. Then we can belt our President and Congressmen to show them how great it is to be a servant to the People.

Only this fucking idiot occupying the WH would say something as fucking stupid as this!

    36. might be because the working conditions in America are coming closer and closer to slavery so you have to give it a positive spin.

And obviously they are racist as fuck.
