Surely this will lead to higher immigration numbers?

We deport the illegal migrant but have to exchange for a different migrant (that the French don’t need to provide any information about). So we exchange someone who we could have deported for someone we can’t deport… our government think we are idiots.

I don’t really understand this scheme, for every person we deport back to France, they send an alternate person

So we’re net in the same position as before? I don’t get it or why this is seen as groundbreaking by labour

Who are the people we’re getting in? Is there specific criteria for them or can the French just give up one of their illegal migrants in the swap? I haven’t seen anything yet

If so then this doesn’t seem like a good deal at all

I’m really shocked people don’t understand why this works – Why pay smugglers to cross the channel when you’re getting sent back. This reduces the incentive to actually cross. If we lower the people wanting to cross via boats then the overall number goes down. It’s a good policy.

So we let one in and send one back, then the one we sent back sneaks back in again.  What is the point?

    6. I really don’t understand why asylum seekers won’t stay in France? There is no war there

Oh look, the government implemented something that’s only slightly better, and not perfect, so let’s moan about it here

They are only detaining 6% and they can avoid removal by making a human rights claim.

The pull factor is still there.
      94% are allowed to stay.
And they will go straight to a hotel.

Basically the new ones have applied legally and will come into a family setting.

The thrown out ones were random males with no family connection and dubious claims to seek asylum

    10. I love how immediately everyone focuses in on the one-in-one-out part of the agreement to decide its unworkable.

Meanwhile Rwanda was a stonking success despite the cost, despite barely deporting anyone, and despite the terms of the agreement being that Rwanda could choose to send us a whole planeload of people for every one person they received.

    11. A better idea would be to remove ourselves from the Refuge Convention and only accept asylum seekers that haven’t passed through a safe country.

Detain those that then cross illegally in a partner country like Rwanda until they wish to be deported back to their original country.

Depressingly, objectively this is the most successful any government has yet been on this issue.

Unless this gets ramped up it will not work.

This could break the people smuggler business model.
Try, get caught and sent back. You don’t get caught and ferried to the UK to start an application.
You’re also banned from proper application.
I hope this helps the situation.

Nothing short of sinking boats will ever be enough for some commenters. So they won’t be satisfied by it. But I hope it has a positive effect

Interesting it’s not just the DM referring to them at “migrants” now.
