    1. > “Is there something riding on it? Yeah, but it’s not as big as people make it out to be,” Gunn said. “They hear these numbers that the movie’s only going to be successful if it makes $700 million or something and it’s just complete and utter nonsense. It doesn’t need to be as big of a situation as people are saying.”

Isn’t the budget like 250 mil? So yeah, while underperforming won’t kill the Superman movie IP, this movie underperforming will signal to studios to put the IP on ice as everyone gets past their superhero fatigue.

    3. It’s the first Superman movie I’ve been interested in seeing since I was a kid and got excited when the Christopher Reeve movies were on TV.

I’m still very sceptical that DC can relaunch a cinematic universe and have it work, but I’m at least eager to watch this movie. Hopefully a lot of people are at least prepared to give it a chance.

So if Superman only makes $500 million, WB will be happy enough to move forward with a sequel and the rest of the DCU as designed? No shot.

$700 million is far from a flop, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a tentpole Superman movie to make a lot of money.

    5. All depends on how much investment went into it. How much it cost to make + what the market budget is informs what the expectation is. That said I’m sure it’s high for a Super Man reboot.

    6. Why does everything have to be the „biggest and bestest ever“ for it to be deemed a success these days? Are we importing infinite growth mindset of big business to evaluate entertainment? Society.

Honestly I think this quote is lowering expectations as a strategy to guarantee “victory.” 700 million is a likely low end. When it does 750-800, they want that seen as a smashing success instead of being seen as a downgrade from films like Deadpool or Guardians 3.

    8. While not a flop, wasn’t MoS labeled as underperforming because it didn’t make a billion?

This is the exact problem with ALL movies made anymore. They are following the how can I make this a billion+ dollar franchise instead of, how can I make a great movie because I love making movies.

More of capitalism and greed fucking things up.

    10. Not to be patronising but having recently researched and written a piece on Hollywood economics he is 100% correct. Box office is the icing on the cake of how a film like this becomes profitable.

With all the curiosity and eyes behind this movie, It’d have to really suck ass and have really poor word-of-mouth for it to bomb. That being said, with all that’s riding behind it, even a middle of the road reception and box-office could be concerning.

All the giant corporations that continually set unrealistic sales expectations and then cancel things when they don’t meet them disagree.

maybe a hot take, but if you’re making something for the numbers, you’re not making art

    14. raylan_givens6 on

sounds like he’s already lowering expectations

if the movie cost $200 million and marketing is reportedly $200 million

they’ll need to make $400 million to break even

its a crowded summer, comic book movies haven’t been special in a long time, people seem over them , and there doesn’t seem to be any real buzz around this movie

then again, Jurassic world did well, F1 has done well – so maybe people are going back to theaters anyway

    15. copperblood on

Ehhhh that’s really troubling when a director who’s also co-chairs a studio says their giant tentpole movie they’re banking the studio’s future on doesn’t need to make a lot of money.

Is he playing an idiot right here? Or maybe he doesn’t know how this business works? If the movie’s budget is around 250 mil (I just don’t believe that it’s „only 200 mil looking at the trailer alone) plus marketing which cost around 200 mil how can you make 500 mil and say it’s enough to be a financial success? I agree that movies don’t need to make 700 mil as a principle to be considered hits, but if your budget is over 200 mil and marketing another 200 mil, well, yeah you have to earn at least 700 mil to break even at best.
