The Ständemehr is a historical compromise between the rural cantons and the more populous ones. Without it, the rural ones might not have joined Switzerland as they would face having very little political power.
Now this right that is the foundation of unity within Switzerland shall be ignored in one of the most fundamental questions, if we accept other people’s laws automatically (to profit economically).
It’s fair to have different opinions on the matter but this is nuts, obviously.

A lot of people will comment without knowing the constitution of their own country, or willfully ignoring it for political gain (I’m looking at you, UDC asshats). Mandatory (double majority) and facultative (simple people’s majority) referenda are provided for different situations. Specifically, the first one is (inter alia) for joining international organizations (NATO, EU), which is absolutely not the case here. It is completely disingenuous to paint the evolution of the bilaterals as something that would require double majority.
