      What specific policy changes are needed? How can Canada attract and retain top talent in AI? What can we learn from Silicon Valley’s successes and failures?

    2. I started reading this article with some ideas already in mind about how Canada (or any other country) could accelerate domestic AI expertise, and the article already mentions every one of those ideas except one: Public education.

      Adult training is good (one of the measures described in the article), but I would argue that it is more important to foster STEM interest in public schools, make sure faculty have enough STEM subject instructors to do a good job with small classes, and provide them with the resources they need to expose kids to AI technology in the classroom.

      Math skills are fundamental to all STEM, and increasingly schoolchildren see no point in learning math skills. „When will I ever need to use this in real life?“ they ask. The solution is to show them cool things they **want** to involve themselves in (like LLM technology), which require strong math skills. Dangle a carrot in front of them and more kids will throw themselves enthusiastically into their studies.

      Like I said, adult training programs are great, but if your pool of interested adults with good math fundamentals is small, that will limit the programs‘ effectiveness. You need to expand that pool, and that starts in the classroom.
