So $2 Trillion / year spent on wars. $0 On a unified planetary defense.

    1. I think you’d first need to unify the people in the World, something we haven’t been able to do in over 100k years.

    2. I’m no expert but I remember reading some agency did a test trying to deviate an asteroid, I don’t even remember the results but at least they tried.

    3. The only interplanetary defense right now is to pray that the asteroid or meteor will hit the „wrong“ country.

    4. The budget for asteroid defence isn’t zero, NASA has a Planetary Defense office (at least until Musk shuts it down). The ESA also has one, which isn’t subject to the vagaries of US politics.

So, amongst all the meteor disaster movies out there, only Greenland was the one to get things kinda correct (apart from the aftermath of a 10 mile asteroid hit) about what would happen in the event of a predicted collision?

    6. We can track them but then what will we do if one is hitting us? Nothing. Maybe that’s why this dumb fuc admin is doing all of this to distract us from our doom. Either way we are all dead.

Not as much but I always think about how we $0.25tn on basically telling eachother new stories (film and TV production).

We could just take a year off making up new stories and use all that money to fix a bunch of problems. Think of the new stories that would come out of that year!

    8. A petition won’t do anything.

You’re mostly right, everyone here definitely knows you’re right. The only way to get the funds for these things is to become politically relevant. Be it either running for federal office, donating to candidates who support this or, a relatively easy way, meet with your senator and federal rep. They hold events and are accessible. You can also request a meeting with their office staff(likely in DC).

Posting on Reddit to sign a petition that they will never see is just virtue signalling and has no practical value, beyond learning what I’ve written and what you choose to do with that information.

I wish you luck, we all need it

    9. we know of one globally catastrophic asteroid impact over the history of earth, 65 million years ago, statistically the likelihood of it repeating in the next few years is near 0 but if we extrapolated a hypothetical one apocalyptic event every 65 million years to a statistical average that would be about 130 deaths per year, if we extrapolate it from all of earths history clsoer to 2

smaller, non apocalyptic asteorids that still do damage happen but statistically cause a number of deaths that as a yearly average rounds down to 0

if you look at problems by how many deaths they cause, statistically, globally and how hard we try fixing them we might be willing to spend a few thousand, maybe a few million on that

but a few million dollars isn’t gonna do much of use so you either have to go beyond htat or you’re wasting moeny

there are actually afew projects researching how smaller asteroids could be diverted

and a lot of effort finding and tracking asteroids whcih can be pretty helpful cause if a smaller asteroid that would wipe out a city is going to hit knowing ahead and evacuating would be nice

but trying to divert really big ones that almsot never happen would statistically be wasteful

    10. (Un)fortunately too few people has died due to asteroid. Even the Chelyabinsk meteor from several years ago didn’t result in much casualties beyond those hit by window fragments (someone please fact check me). If one were to wipe out at say a thousand people all at once, you can bet that governments would shit their pants and start drafting some planetary defense plan.
