It’s bad and stupid rherotic but there just isn’t a ceasefire ever without Ukraine de-facto giving up territory, same is true with Russia no longer performing strikes in Ukraine or trying to swing Ukrainian politics.

    2. This is the ugly side of a negotiated peace. We haven’t had to deal with this in recent memory.

I realistically don’t see a way in which Ukraine achieves peace without giving up a large chunk of land in the east.

In doing so, Russia would claim more land. Land that is devastated and mined to hell. Ukraine would hopefully be offered a security agreement by French or Polish armed forces.

A DMZ could be formed and defended

I just don’t see a way that Ukraine would be able to successfully counter attack the Russian biomass and reclaim the large swaths of land that have been lost without allies getting involved directly.

I do not care if Ukraine has to give up parts of the East, but it must happen in the context of real security guarantees so we’re not dealing with this again in 5-10 years.

      One thing no one mentions and hopefully someone cleverer than me can answer;

If ukraine cedes their eastern territory and a peacekeeping force is sent to a DMZ zone, would they get pulled into a full war if theres accidental (or incidental) casualties during a ceasefire?

Even more conspiratorial, could Ukraine lead them into this via a false flag to try and push Russia out?

Isn’t there some rising super-power I keep hearing about that could step in and save the day? Someone with a vested interest in preventing Russia’s westward expansion?

    7. Ukraine have already agreed to reclaim territory by diplomacy not militarily. The US know de jure recognition is a red line for Ukraine not just Zelensky. Unless he is really a Russian agent or actally as stupid as he looks, this is just setting up another excuse to cut aid for Ukraine.

    8. Witkoff hasn’t made any official proposals. His job is to hear out both sides, identify what are
red lines and what is negotiable and use that as a basis to start negotiations. Saying what Russian wants does not amount to endorsing a proposal, nor is his view relevant at this stage.

I mean yeah, that’s how peace deals work.

The real issue is failure to demand similar concessions from Russia. Specifically, the return of Kaliningrad to Germany/Poland/Lithuania and return of the Kuril Islands to Japan.

After 10 years, if peace is maintained, consider talks to invite both to NATO.

At this stage it’s easy to conclude that America is just on Russia side. It’s so sad.

    11. If we were to put our tinfoil hats on, one could theorize that Witkoff’s shuttling between Russia, Ukraine, & Oman is a horse trade which involves the redrawing of spheres of influence between the US and Russia. As part of this, Ukraine, to some extent, can be a bargaining chip to be sacrificed. Perhaps the US & Russia can/have agreed to terms on Iran, which likely will involve an MBS style regime reform where the son takes over from the father and slowly modernizes? While unthinkable, this could be the best case outcome to secure American interests in the region. The United States securing their influence on middle eastern energy flows/OPEC would certainly be a first step in dismantling the Chinese economy. The next step would likely be further instability in the African continent through US/Russian assets to cripple China’s rare earth dominance.

As for the Israeli question, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a more docile Iranian attitude towards them. The Israeli’s have secured most of the land they sought and thus the necessity for Iran playing the counterweight in the region is no longer in Israels interest. As they seek further land incursions into Syria, and given the thorn Erdogan is becoming for the west, I reckon we see a Turkish/Israeli conflict slowly build.

Love to hear others thoughts on this, and if I’m, as they say, off the deep end.
