I’ve been to the D-Day beaches. Walked out to the surf and looked at how far these guys had to go just to get off the beach. For those that survived it had to just be luck.

My maternal grandfather was a driver of an LST during D-Day. I never asked him directly but there were some times where he’d just say to me, I did things so you wouldn’t have to.
Fuck all those people who are willfully forgetting what we fought for and against in WWII.

My grandfather was on Juno beach with the Canadians. Only found out after he’d died.

I once read (can’t recall where) that in photo number 2 all the black specks you see on the beach are dead bodies (other then the obvious bomb craters) I think it really shows how few made it just steps off the landing craft

I always have to look through these, I know theres a 1 in a million chance, but if I could by chance see my grandpa it would destroy me if I missed it. He passed away 15 years ago and never got to meet my children, but I make sure to tell them about him.
Maybe someday we will have an AI face catalogue and be able to do a more sophisticated search.
