Isn’t a tariff on everyone effectively a sanction on yourself?

His purpose is to move back those factory to USA so they produce domestically and reduce the costs
But I wonder if it’s gonna put opposite effects instead, they basically isolated and sanctioned themselves from global trade, since most of resources needed for those products usually found in foreign countries
No wonder they’re targeting Canada and Greenland too, their resources and potential new trade route in the Arctic probably makes them drool

America has the world’s largest consumer market. He is very bluntly leveraging it. I’m guessing the gamble is that most countries will still want access to the American market, especially if they’re export driven economies. And he’s gambling that the American economy is more able to take hits and weather a global shakeup then most other countries.
The only other large consumer bases that can replace the American market are Canada, China and India. And they have their own problems. Canada has the middle class wealth but not the numbers. China has a vast middle class but it’s aging rapidly , and India is…India.
Will be interesting to see how this plays out long term.

Who does Trump thinks will pay these tariffs?
If Country A imposes a 20% tariff on goods imported from Country B, the importers in Country A are the ones who pay the 20% charge.
This means American importers will be paying a premium to US government on almost all products entering America.
To make up for their loss, these importers will sell the products at a higher markup which American citizens will pay for.
Who will suffer? Americans lol
