The US expectation that Canada increases defence spending is bipartisan in nature in America. I’ve seen Susan Rice (former advisor to Obama) as recently as this fall chastise Canadians for not meeting NATO spending targets.

Tying the CUSMA renegotiation to defence spending is an interesting way to enhance both the economic and security arrangements that Mark Carney himself has agreed will be negotiated with Donald Trump.

    2. Even disregarding him wanting to increase US trade it’s funny he expects a better trade deal from renegotiations of CUSMA.

      >Canadian Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says his government would push for an urgent renegotiation of the Canada-United-States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), and all revenues collected from increased trade with the U.S. would fund expanding Canada’s military.

What’s the point when Trump won’t honour CUSMA after he signed it? Poilievre is clueless.

„We’ll become a truly sovereign nation“

Screw that noise, we already are. If I wanted to hear brain dead MAGA talking points about how we’re not a real nation, I’d go listen to Danielle Smith.

    6. I don’t get this.

America is dying. Sure we can keep some trade going but it’s obvious the main focus now HAS to be stronger economic ties with practically anyone else, including between ourselves.

    7. mikeoxywrecked on

The issue with this proposal is that the paper the agreement is signed on has more value than any deal with the US

    8. I don’t think forcing us into MORE trade with the US plays out well in any scenario ever.

Pierre doesn’t have a record for proposing helpful solutions, but this is straight up shortsighted. Where his glasses at.

    9. CertainHeart2890 on

I feel like Poilievre is unwilling to face the moment we are in, right now. His campaign seems to be built from before November, with no update for what’s actually happening. Canadians, many of us, anyway, don’t want *more* trade with the US, we want less, we want to untangle our ties, not deepen them

    10. >Canadian Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says his government would push for an urgent renegotiation of the Canada-United-States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), and all revenues collected from increased trade with the U.S. would fund expanding Canada’s military.

What makes him think there’s going to be that much increased revenues from a President who wants to import less and export more?

    11. uprightshark on

Even Poilievre isn’t this stupid, he is just desperate and saying anything he can to get votes.

Trump signed the last deal and boasted it as the best deal in history. And now we are here. There is no negotiation with someone that can not be trusted to hold up their end, or has any respect for relationships, rules or norms.

If we are stupid enough to hand Poilievre the wheel, we are heading for the tree. Get your helmet on!

It’s one way to eat up the deficit shortfall for sure, but I’d rather see some home grown solutions or collaborations with European providers. Besides do we really trust America after using the fentanyl crisis as a way to cancel the NAFTA-2.0

    13. „We will build a wall and we will Mexico pay for it“ – Felon Trump

„We will build an army and we will make the United State pay for it“ – Discount Trump

Sure, I heard they’re hungry for our stuff!

    14. twizzjewink on

Doesn’t work that way PP .. expanding trade at the EXPENSE of the Economy to help pay for the Military? Basically selling Canada out.

      edit: No Plan PP ..

    15. Laughing_Zero on

Maybe some bold conservative will tell Pierre that our trade with the US is shrinking rapidly. And it’s the fault of the US President.

    16. SofaProfessor on

I think the bigger story here is that Poilievre has a magic wand hidden in his ass no one knew about. We expect every candidate to promise the world and follow through on maybe 50% of it but this is a whole new level. What makes anyone think INCREASED trade with the US is in the cards at all? And, even if you think it’s possible, why do you think that’s the horse to hitch your wagon to at this point?

    17. Why does he insist to keep trading with a partner that cannot keep his promises? Why can’t he suggest to trade more with more reliable countries?

    18. So he wants to increase our reliance on a partner that’s shown itself to be unreliable?

    19. What is the point of negotiating any trade agreements with this senile piece of shit? He’s objectively proven they’re worthless, and acting like they’re not is just ass-kissing at this point.

    20. Linked1nPark on

Yeah that’s exactly what Canadians are into right now – increasing trade and dependency on the US. Keep up the great work Poilievre you’re really good at this whole politics thing.

    21. Fuck right off, PP. we need to get free of the US, not tie ourselves more tightly to them.
