    1. The trick here is convicne the cashier that you’re actually *Irish* – not English.

I am always quite cautious with stories like these. Yes, there is racism here and there but for of many of the stories reported here on Reddit, I would love to hear the other side. E.g., from my experience night shifts at Burger King have a significant proportion of employees who don’t speak English. I would say that it is way more likely that the server really didn’t speak English than that person being deliberately racist.

a lot of Germans don’t really speak english. I don’t understand how tf everybody thinks German people speak fluent english just because they work at burger king…

Most of us only had it in school, and went through that with a passing grade only. and never used it afterwards. Not all of us stick to the internet, and use english on a daily basis.

Actually, the general majority of Germans you meet on reddit are the minority in Germany. Sure, you CAN give them your phone and use google translate, but that is (unfortunatly) a personal decision for extra customer service.

    4. So, how does the person know the cashier was pretending? Yes, we have English in school, but many don’t use it and ar quite shy and insecure about it. Also, who says the person even went to school in Germany and thus learned English? If the person does not understand German, how does the person know what they were laughing about? Laughing can also be a sign of nervousness. Maybe the cashier was asking the colleague if they understand what ktmux said and they laughed out of being overwhelmed.

Also, I would not give anyone my phone. Why should I do that? If the person cannot speak German, why did ktmux not use their phone to communicate and translate. Also pointing to something and saying „Bic Mac, please“ does not require so much language skills.

    5. Because foreigners are the weakest my friend, only the low intelligent act like this, you are superior

    6. Maybe it is my toxic trait to believe this, but I am pretty fucking sure I could order in a Burger King in any country or language.

Hello, ööö whopper cola ketchup… <smiles>

Has nothing to do with racism, even if they actually just were pretending to not understand them, at „worst“ it‘d be xenophobia and that shit is rampant all over Europe, and that most definetly includes the Germanspeaking part no question about it. This seems like it‘s pretending that this is only a problem in Germany.

    8. As a student from another country I completely agree that at the end of the day it’s on you to learn German. You cannot expect others to speak to you in the language you know especially in their own country.

    9. I mean its possible they pretended to not speak English. Its also possible they didn’t speak English. Maybe they were being racist. Maybe they were just being assholes. Maybe the customer was being an asshole end they took the opportunity to not having to serve them. You can’t tell by just that post.

What I can tell you is: you absolutely can chose what languages you speak, and even more so your religion. And even even more so you decide if you make it another persons problem. If you’re in a foreign country and don’t speak the language its your responsibility to take out your phone and use it as a translator. Don’t expect the workers you encounter to solve your problems.

    10. You can absolutely choose your religion. As long as you are not coerced into believing but even than you can leave
