This administration is certainly going to set themselves up for bad press if/when the first scooter-related accident or death occurs with riders in that age bracket.
Otherwise, I prefer that the money is available more for young people. They need all the help they can get. Hopefully they will use it wisely.
Like you said, another issue of throwing money at the problem, like the 25k to ditch your license scheme. So long as there’s no viable alternatives people will keep using their car and get licenses early. Like have you seen the Mcast Paola bus stop in the afternoon!? No wonder those people want to drive asap.
not a bad incentive but with all the money spent on this and the 25k for your license we could have some really nice bike lanes and more public transport, the government could also appease their overlord developers with all the new infrastructure which can be built so none of this makes much sense as to why they will just dish out money rather than solve the actual problem
It’s hilarious to me how anyone would give up driving for such small amounts of money.
Is the money compensation for having to use public transportation and driving services? That’s how you have to look at it. Every time you need to go somewhere it will be time waiting for a bus or money spent for a ride share service.
So basically funding the first second hand car purchase after university.
Motorcycles and scooters are dangerous even if driven responsibly considering the state of our roads. Families don’t have any kids to spare. I would not encourage anyone to take up this offer.
Remove street parking, replace with larger sidewalks and bike lanes. The problem will sort itself out without giving massive handouts.
That may be political suicide though…
In Malta, they try to solve everything throwing money or getting it.
They shouldn’t be offered any money , just raise the age.
All they’re doing is kicking the can down the street. Malta needs to start creating a subway system NOW. It’s already almost too late. I’ve been saying this for almost 30 years….😩. They need to ban SUVs and hike taxes on all car imports excepting vehicles like smart cars and fiat 500. They need to install bike lanes to cut emissions, reduce air pollution and get the Maltese more fit – a big necessity when diabetes is not only endemic but also rife
I fully agree with the spirit of it – we cannot continue having 1 person cars on the street and new drivers need to be pushed towards scooters and busses.
However I’m not sure simply offering money is a good approach – it should be enforced by raising the driving age to 21 and lowering the scooter age to 17. Perhaps also make scooter purchases VAT free.
Any money should be invested in making streets safer for scooters and public transport.
Similarly people should be disincentivised from driving by introducing paid on-street parking. All the money collected would go into improving the bus system.
Lastly I think Malta should heavily tax or ban SUVs and cars with big engines.
