This piece is about how America can’t move forward by retreating into a mythologized past. If we want a future that’s truly just and inclusive, we have to reckon with our history honestly, embrace complexity, and rebuild systems based on compassion—not nostalgia or fear. I’m hoping it sparks discussion about what kind of country we could be if we let go of outdated narratives and dared to imagine something new. What would a future look like that prioritizes healing, justice, and collective wellbeing over dominance or division?
I’m all for going back to when 1 dude working at a grocery store could own a house, support a family of 3-4 people and have enough money to own a car, take vacations, etc.
From what I understand, as people age they tend to become more conservative. This coupled with the skyrocketing births post WWII, created a huge population boom that’s is currently retired, conservative and voting. I expect that once this generation passes, things should become more progressive again.
Maybe the unspoken message isn’t that „we need to go backward to be great again,“ but „the existing system needs to be destroyed“ to achieve someone’s idea of „greatness „?

MAGA.
You do need to go back–in terms of your taxes, but not other aspects. Take your tax rates back to the 1950s levels and you will be great again. Unfortunately, your MAGA government is doing the opposite and still pushing the trickle down bullshit, and your people are too dumb to see it.
It’s literally impossible now to move forward. If a democrat is president the republicans will block everything they do. If a republican is president the democrats will block everything they do. No one can move forward anymore.
Does going backwards mean we also ditch the billionaires?
Most people believe that progress requires looking forward, not back.
Solid post OP – the past will never be the future. Progression is inevitable. We can’t talk about becoming a manufacturing power without talking about robots becoming that workforce. We can’t talk about education without talking about what kind of jobs those educated will be able to get that won’t be taken by robots or ai. We can’t continually expand our cities and infrastructure, unless taxes continually rise to pay for that infrastructure.
People need to understand that everyone needs something from our government. Farmers in Iowa depend on our government as much as Tesla does, which is the same as the banks on Wall Street and the single mom in the inner city, to the retired, etc. The fighting and far swings of the pendulum are bad for the people and this country.
I’m tired of being told by someone with virtually no life experience how we could be great.
Going back is a myth. Time moves in one direction. You can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube, you can’t go back to 19xx and try again. The only thing we can do is pick each other up and keep pushing forward
s/ Ahh the good ole’ days. My car ran smoother on leaded gas and my electricity was more ‘letric with coal and I didn’t have to tell my wife how to vote because she couldn’t.

Dictators cant make your current state better, so they always sell you future based on some imagined „great“ past.
