They are store brand not name brand. Just as good. Sometimes even better.

    2. Buy from a oriental shop, best quality and best bulk price. Remmeber to rinse before use.
      K-menu is a house/no name brand.

As someone who came from a country that eats rice 3x a day (but not anymore here) rainbow and golden sun (lidl) do the job. I might have tried the K rice but didn’t like it.

Uncle Ben’s is by Mars incorporated, American brand accused of child labour.
      Overpriced too.
Store brands are just as good (K Menu, Xtra, Coop etc) and much cheaper too.
      Also Boycott USA!

I like Jasmine variant of rice, and the best/cheapest ones I’ve gotten are from Lidl (Golden Sun) and from SGroup/Alepa (Preah Vihear).

I made the mistake of getting the Kbrand when I first got here because it was the cheapest and ate only half of it.

Ugh, terrible cheap bleached rice with no flavour. If you absolutely need to buy rice from a supermarket, buy Lidl Basmati in the purple bag.

You’re in Turku also (we’re in Raisio)? I would heavily recommend going to Asian Taste Market on Koulukatu and buy a 5kg bag of Royal King 1121 basmati rice. You will never look back. 1121 Basmati is a hybrid super-long grain Basmati. Unlike supermarket white rice, it isn’t super-processed and tasteless. Nutty, but not as much as wholegrain brown rice. I rinse my rice until the water runs clear, then soak it for an hour prior to cooking with a little salt.

This will change your life. It isn’t cheaper, but it certainly isn’t a bank-breaker.

So Finnish stores have their own storebrands on top of the big brands. So in your case K-Citymarket Turku has Ben’s which is the big brand, and then there is Pirkka which you don’t have here and K-Menu.

Big brand is usually the most expensive, Pirkka bit cheaper and K-Menu is the cheapest. Quality wise Big brand and Pirkka are usually the same, K-Menu can vary quite a bit. Bulk stuff like rice, K-Menu can be quite good.

And Prismas, S-Markets and Sales have similar system. But they have Big Brand > Kotimaista > Coop > X-tra.

      Lidls, I have no idea…

    8. Depends on how you like your rice. For something like a bit sticky white rice, jasmin (preah vihear). For basmati, the pirkka brand is okay. If I want fried rice, I mix Xtra (red) parboiled & Xtra (green).

The right ratio of rice and water is the secret.

    9. When buying rice: buy cheapest with most in it.

If you use tons of rice like me, you wanna go to the asian store near you and pick up a 5kg bag.

If it matters WHAT rice it is. Let’s say basmati or jasmine. The best options are at that asian store.

    10. Lidl Basmati 1 kg by far the cheapest for me apart from from some ethic shops.

    11. Do not save on products that are dirt cheap already. It makes no financial sense to wonder about 30% cheaper prices on stuff that is already way below your willingness to pay for it anyway. I recommend you go to an oriental store, look for a 5-10kg bag that says „premium jasmin rice“ and grab that. Better, and cheap. If you live in turku I recommend Nurmi Dao. The big-ish red and see through bag at the basement level.

K menu is the K stores‘ own brand, so the price difference is coming from the lack of paying for the brand. The S stores version is coop. A decent portion of the time, the store brand is equally as good if not better than the name brand version. The main thing you want to look at when selecting rice is the type of rice. Rice is a plant, if it’s jasmine it will taste like jasmine rise no matter what brand it comes from. The precooking might be different, that’s how you get the stuff that is done faster, it’s already been cooked, precooked, for a certain amount of time. Precooking leads to shorter shelf life usually because it introduces moisture to the rice. I’ve personally enjoyed getting one of the massive bags from an Asian market, you get it in bulk so it’s cheaper and dry white rice stays good for a really long time, like 2 years, a bit longer, as long as it stays dry and gets nothing else into it, so just having a random bag of white rice in a corner of the apartment is cheap living. The brand really only affects how well the rice is cleaned before packaging (we have high standards so any brand is actually good, but personal bad experiences can lead people away or towards certain brands) and the ethical ties of brands if that is something you are interested in.

African and east asian stores sell rice too. I’m willing to bet they taste much better as well. At around 3 €/kg

The cheap stuff is the best. You can usually find even cheaper stuff in ethnic stores.
