Putin’s response was essentially a mealy-mouthed way of stalling for time while making it look like he agreed to the ceasefire.
I think that underneath his pride and delusions, Putin realises that this is his exit ramp, and that such an opportunity won’t repeat itself anytime soon. So he’s trying to hold off until he can maximise his gains and have his negotiating team brainstorm how to get the maximum benefit out of subsequent peace talks.
I doubt if Putin will be able to politically survive unless he gets a very good deal. He may use this as a way to rearm and rebuild his miltary. Anyone who thinks he would respect a truce for long may be naive.
I can predict what the Putin/Trump talk tomorrow will produce: US gets minerals, Putin gets land, and Ukraine gets nothing.
Guys, we can trust that Putin will keep his promises, right?
There’s a slight chance that tomorrow Putin will overplay his hand and anger Trump by not accepting his deal and demanding outrageous concessions.
I don’t see anything being decided in the talks. This is just a way of identifying each side’s
red lines and what each might concede.
I don’t think Putin’s ambitions extended beyond the Donbass and Crimea. The ambitions (since 2014) got bigger as the war progressed, but will now come up against the limitations of the
economy, the military in extending the war and public support.
De-escalation and confidence building may be easier to achieve than a ceasefire – e.g. not attacking each other’s energy facilities, or exchanging prisoners.
