The US president claims to have sent a letter to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, seeking a new deal with Tehran to restrain its rapidly advancing nuclear program.
It is the first step taken by Mr Trump in his second presidential term to sound out his Iranian counterpart to see if a new deal is possible, after pulling the US out of the previous agreement during his first term.
“I hope you’re going to negotiate because it’s going to be a lot better for Iran and I think they want to get that letter,” Mr Trump told Fox Business News.
“The other alternative is we have to do something because you can’t let [Iran] have a nuclear weapon.
“I’ve written them a letter, saying I hope you’re going to negotiate because if we have to go in militarily it’s going to be a terrible thing for them,” Mr Trump added.
Oh so now he suddenly wants a deal? He tore up the old one and that’s why Iran is on the brink of building nuclear weapons right now.
And if it happens, in a few years he’ll probably ask „who the hell signed this terrible deal“ and tear it up again, just like the USMCA.
He is not a serious man.

He threw out the last one. On top of that, if there’s any country he doesn’t have an ounce of goodwill with, it’s Iran. He put most of the current sanctions on them and assassinated one of their generals.

My understanding is they would never make a deal because US can’t be trusted to abide by any deals.

What kind of country will refuse to have nukes after what happened in Ukraine?

Took decades to bring them to the table for a deal and he’s destroyed that within his first term. Is he going to threaten them to sign a deal?

I bet he’ll threaten them with tariffs. That seems to be his only idea.

Ya im not sure what the gameplan is. An invasion isnt on the table and anything less than absolute carnage- which involves killing millions of people and burning the country to its core- the regime will likely be able to complete a few nukes and attach them to warheads that can actually reach the states (or at the very least destroy Isreal/other US allies in the region).
The logistics of an invasion in Iran never really made sense. even without nukes, they have enough missiles to overwhelm a small country like Israel and cause catastrophic damage. It would be a last resort and a proverbial middle finger as they die, but they could cause havoc.
More to the point, in the last decade or so, we’ve seen 2 countries absolutely devastated after giving up nukes (Ukraine/Libya). The threat to the Kohameni regime here from Trump will sound something like „Keep your nuclear program and we’ll kill you or give it up, and we’ll kill you…your choice“.
