JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s defense ministry on Saturday said the military has been instructed to prepare to defend a Druze settlement in the suburbs of Damascus, asserting that the minority it has vowed to protect was “under attack” by Syrian forces.
The statement, citing an order from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, follows an Israeli warning last weekend that the forces of neighboring Syria’s new government and the insurgent group that led last year’s ouster of former President Bashar Assad should not enter the area south of Damascus.
Saturday’s statement indicates that Israeli forces could push farther into Syria as its new authorities try to consolidate control after more than a decade of civil war. Israeli forces recently set up posts in a buffer zone and on strategic Mt. Hermon nearby. There have been no major clashes between Israeli troops and Syria’s new forces.

“We will not allow the terrorist regime of radical Islam in Syria to harm the Druze. If the regime harms the Druze, it will be harmed by us,” the statement said.
There was no immediate response from Syria’s government
Again, what interest does Israel have in Syrian Druze, and what strategic aims does this achieve?
All this achieves is risks a major war for very little gain.
I really wonder what Turkey will do about this, and what they can do. Kicking out Assad was a major success for them, completely declawing both Iran and Russia in the region, and without tensions erupting with the Syrian Kurds, only for Israel that you’d think were also happy with removing IRGC, Hamas, and Hezbollah to now start compromising the stability of the new regime from the very beginning.
I guess some realpolitikal arguments can be made for Israel’s actions, but is it really worth it considering that instability could make Iranian proxies or Sunni extremists slowly regain power? Al-Sharaa might not be particularly moderate, but compared to many potential alternatives he absolutely is. I’m almost starting to give some credence to the idea that Netanyahu needs conflict to stay afloat domestically. If he does, how far will Turkey let them push?
This is a Donbas case
This is literally the Putin and Kagame playbook being repeated by Netanyahu.
Empírical evidence shows clearly no minority has ever thrived, let alone protected under Islamist rule. Druze and Christian population in Gaza and West Bank have dwindled, as have Copts in Egypt, Maronites in Lebanon, and Christians in Africa where Islamist sects routinely massacre Christians en masse. Hell, it’s already happening wherever they’ve gained substantial minority.
Meanwhile, Israel had absorbed Ethiopian Jews, Arabs, Druze, and foreign workers, treating them far humanely than how Southeast Asian workers are treated in East Asia and the Middle East.
If HTS had the sole choice of determining Southern Syria, we’d see Druze kidnapped left and right, as already happening with Christians in Damascus.
It’s funny, self-determination are crocodile tears spread by Islamists, rather than Druze on the ground. If the new Syrian government had their way, the majority Druze in Southern Syria will be a measly minority within less than a generation as we’ve seen in all Islamist controlled regimes.
Israel providing protection and economic livelihood to Druze while further securing their national defense and thwarting Hezbollah’s logistical routes is the best for humanity.
If Israel’s most important ally no longer seeks to uphold manufactured pretexts for an invasion as that, manufactured, it must seem like an opportune time for Israel to align with Washington’s new normative playbook
The Syrian government is not threatening the Syrian Druze with annihilation or anything close. The new Syrian government hasn’t even mistreated the Alawite towns where Assad’s commanders came from. We have actually not seen widespread and unjust actions against minority groups under this new government….YET.
This is a weak excuse for Israel to goad the new Syrian government into a confrontation, as they have been trying for months now. And I highly doubt the Syrian Druze want the Israeli army sieging Damascus on their behalf. The Syrian people want peace right now and only Israel is threatening it.
Israel wants to destroy the Syrian government before it holds elections and gains legitimacy.
We fought Iran & Russia for decades and this is what we get? We’re being consumed bit by bit. You might as well start wondering if Iran and Israel have secret deals between each other.
For those asking about the Druze – Israel made this move while Druze leadership were outside of Suwayda Governate, participating in the national conference that is drafting the new constitution. It was timed very precisely.
