An Israeli official has announced that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will not withdraw from the Philadelphi Corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border, despite the current ceasefire agreement requiring such a move. The official emphasized the necessity of maintaining a military presence to prevent Hamas from rearming through smuggling routes. This decision comes as the first phase of the ceasefire concludes, during which over 600 Palestinian prisoners were exchanged for the remains of four Israeli hostages. Hamas has criticized Israel’s stance, labeling it a blatant violation of the ceasefire terms.

It’s a zone that Egypt was supposed to guard properly. But clearly everything is not working and no one did their part before the civil war started so some new protection must be set in place. Maybe Egypt could negotiate a new deal where they take over this zone? Or some mix of soldiers from Egypt, Israel, and Gaza? Leaving it unprotected would just invited more attacks as they can use it to smuggle weapons into the territory.
