Extended question: I was born in the mid ’90s so I grew up in the 2000s and 2010s. When I was a kid, the USA was number one, they were f***ing up the terrorists in middle eastern and central Asian counties (for good or bad), China was a distant second, Russia was defanged and declawed and North Korea didn’t have any proper nukes. Then suddenly, after I finished school and started university in the mid 2010s, things started deteriorating, suddenly we weren’t in the US dominated world I grew up in, suddenly we were in a „multi polar world“ where the US was supposedly too weak to do anything. But it doesn’t make sense and it STILL doesn’t make sense: The US by most metrics is still BY FAR the most powerful country on Earth, so why doesn’t it act like it? Why is it pussyfooting around international relations. To not even mention Trump, the US was already doing this in the tail end of Obama’s and for the whole of Biden’s term. Trump’s second term so far has been a complete JOKE! Isolationist America for literally no reason at all.
If you’re wondering about my background, I’m British and I live in Taiwan (and have no plan to move anytime soon). So I guess I’m just completely f***ed right? What gives America, why are you acting so WEAK when objectively you are STRONG?
America voted in a crazy person. That is backed by fundamentalist Christian group who is running the show behind curtain. both are insane groups. pretty much sums up everything.
Not sure what metrics you’re referring to but the gap is sharing on some and they were distanced on others. Us is too overstretched in a different world now to play police man.
They also abused their dominance that most of the countries are fearing for themselves and are happy, at least privately, to welcome a new contender to balance things out… What is happening with Trump always been there, just hiding behind a curtain, now he doesn’t care to hidden it… So those with doubts don’t have anymore
There’s nothing isolationist about the US. It’s just one guy in power and the Americans have forgotten what a president actually does. They’ve given themselves a dictator who doesn’t understand his own position and they just sort of allow it
Short answer: Western culture went bonkers, got lazy, and learned how to vote money out of the treasury. They also learned that you can stay in power by letting lots of poor immigrants in and give them free stuff to vote for you. In the US at least there was pretty awesome scam going on where the government would blow money on stupid stuff, the people running the spending would skim off the top and they would make sure to use some of that skim to support politicians that keep the money flowing. Its like the last 15 years or so have just a big fake bubble of stupidity.
What’s going on right now is pushback. A bit of a pendulum swing.
All that being said, I have no idea what he heck Trump’s current flipout on Ukraine is about. I HOPE its all theatre to make Europe get off its rear end and take care of problems on its own, but who knows.
The unipolar moment is over. We have returned to a multipolar world where Realpolitik takes primacy.

I think it is fairly simple. The current US administration does not see democracy as something virtuous. While geopolitics often present the world in terms of empires and their fiefs, like a PC strategy game – in reality it is governed by ideas and thoughts. For some 100 years now, the line has been between those that believe in freedome and democracy and those that believe in a more authoritarian approach. The United States has been the champion of the democracy team. It no longer wants to be.
This is obviously a setback for team democracy, but the only way forward is to stay calm and keep fighting.
Trump is trying to make some big moves both domestically in the US and on the world stage. Early days yet – no way to predict how things go. But the fundamentals more or less remain the same geopolitically.
a) China isn’t about to change course (long term). At least there is not much indication of it. Their short term goal is Taiwan and Xi Jinping has made no secret of it since 2015-2016 that force is not ruled out. The primary limitation is that a full scale invasion will be very very costly and uncertain for now. It is not likely that an economic embargo succeeds either for the time being. Trump is not likely to change much – there may be meetings, discussions etc but fundamentally the Chinese and US are rivals for the foreseeable future. Many experts have given a window of 2027-2034 where China’s navy develops to an extent and before Xi Jinping might retire.
China doesn’t have time on its side – by 2040, demography indicates that they will have a small population of 20-34 year olds (people born from 2005 to 2020) This will still be a large population but there will be a bit of a problem regarding welfare for the elderly. And if trends aren’t reversed (<10m births/year)by 2050, it seems likely that armed conquest might be infeasible.
b) Russia isn’t about to change course. It won’t collapse in the short term although it will undergo more and more economic pain regardless. I suspect it too will soon (in the next 10 years) start to look East and consider what/how much land it will give up to China.
c) Trump has changed the complexion of the Ukraine conflict primarily by pushing Europe. Personally, I don’t think it is a good idea to rush it (but hardly anything has happened). It was always going to be a bigger issue for Europe than the US. Retaking land for Ukraine was a very small likelihood outcome unless someone sent in actual fighting force and this hasn’t changed. If Ukraine doesn’t want a ceasefire, then Europe needs to step up (nothing changed here). Russia isn’t interested in a ceasefire unless the terms are guaranteed by the US and favorable to them. Europe has to persuade Ukraine with substantive assistance to allow Ukraine to reject a US-Russian plan.
