SS: Friedrich Merz has increasingly positioned himself as a pro-European leader, advocating for further European integration in a manner reminiscent of both Macron and Adenauer’s vision for strategic autonomy. Adenauer envisioned a strong Europe on the world stage and pushed for the European Defence Community and European Army in 1952, which almost happened until France pulled out at the last moment. Merz‘ approach suggests a desire to align Germany more closely with France and other states in shaping the EU’s future, emphasizing economic strength, security integration and institutional reform. In an op-ed he cowrote with German philosopher Habermas, he called for a European Army and further federalizing Europe.
I think most Americans agree with this regardless of political identity. A strong unified Europe means the US doesn’t have to do all the heavy lifting to maintain Western global order, while simultaneously ensuring that the rest of the world’s security isn’t vulnerable to a single US election throwing everything in the toilet.
Is this change *good* for the US? Probably not, but it’s what the voters want.
While I like what he’s saying, there are words and there are actions. Macron has always said a lot of words, but it’s actions that matter too, which he was lacking. From what I’ve heard about Merz, he’s also a man of words.
But who knows. Maybe the sleeping giant is awakening and we’ll find ourselves in a different world soon.

This is the right way to go For EU, either they unify and join the Big and powerfull nations of the world or they are destined to Fail. We are in a point in history were only big players have a say.
Good luck. Western history is a never-ending story of European war and disharmony. There are far too many cultural, economic, and philosophical differences already.
He’s saying obvious things. I want to know how he understands the challenges and what solutions he proposes.
It took US 8 years to tie together 13 states. How long will it take 27 well established nations to have a federal government?
Unfortunately Europe is strangled by systemic challenges which prevent the kind of reform that would be needed.
Market reforms and permitting are foremost.

Well the French and the Germans gave it a good go in previous centuries but the Anglo came out on top in the end.
The irony is that modern day European bureaucrats are trying to re center Europe as a world power while running of the mental software the Americans gave them post ww2. Something explicitly designed to prevent just that. (British in, Russians out, Germans down etc etc)
