Let’s just go with the observable universe to forego the argument that if the universe were infinite, then life almost surely must exist. Eve the observable universe is so unimaginably huge in scope that at least microbial life must almost surely exist.
Yeah, a good scientist would point out that you can’t say for 100% certain without positive proof, but if the question was „do you agree or disagree that life likely exists…“ then even a good scientist should say it is „likely,“ which isn’t the same as saying it is a certainty.

I would be interested to hear the justification of the other 13%. As we all know, space is insanely vast with about 2 trillion galaxies in the known universe, and about 100 billion stars per galaxy. The building blocks of life are common, and life formed on Earth extremely soon after it cooled enough to become habitable in earliest days of the Solar System. Is there any reason to think life only exists on Earth?
(Of course „intelligent“ life is a whole different matter and that may be extremely rare.)

There’s 10^22 to 10^23 stars in the observable universe. If life is extremely rare, if intelligent life is extremely rare, it’s likely still out there somewhere. But it might be 10 million or 100 million or a billion light years away. It might be so far away that we can’t interact with it, and it can’t interact with us. Just detecting intelligent life 10 million light years away would be incredibly difficult.
There are just 1 x 10^11 to 4 x 10^11 stars in the Milky Way. There are 2 x 10^12 stars in the Local Group. That’s the area that an intelligent civilization could realistically interact with, based on what we know about the universe. Those are much smaller numbers. If life is rare, or if intelligent life is rare, we could end up alone in the Milky Way or Local Group. We would be effectively alone.

The probability alone is just more likely than not. Billions of galaxies each containing billions of stars with most of those stars having multiple planets. The numbers are in our favor. The only caveat is that the speed of light is one hell of a speed limit when you consider the vast distances that separate celestial bodies.

I’m amazed at how the hunt for extraterrestrial life has changed over the last few decades, from a place of pseudoscience to a widely accepted theory.
Now the discussion has moved to a matter of complexity and the idea live exists or might have existed somewhere else in our solar system is no longer a joke.
It’s crazy that our understanding of the universe has changed so much in such a short amount of time.

Nobody knows the true number of planets in the universe, but estimates range from quintillions to octillions. That means that even if the odds of life are one-in-a-TRILLION, there are potentially trillions or quadrillions of planets out there with life on them.

I think there could be life elsewhere, but until scientists show that they can reproduce even a super basic organism I’m going to let that possibly fall somewhere under the umbrella of creationism. I believe it is possible that over billions of years life could develop but I’m not versed in the theories currently out there for how this would happen. Bunch of organic molecules bumping into eachother… idk how that results in basic life

The fact that 14 of the 20 protein-building amino acids found in life on earth, were found on [asteroids](https://eos.org/articles/lifes-building-blocks-found-in-bennu-samples#:~:text=Regolith%20samples%20from%20asteroid%20Bennu,DNA%20and%20RNA%2C%20and%20ammonia.) around earth, really makes me think, at least simple, life isn’t as uncommon in the universe as some like to think
I, for one, would die happy knowing that evidence of life has been found outside of our tiny sphere. I have real hope for Europa, Io, or Ganymede.
There’s a very high likelihood that there is bacteria, and one of the theories for our life was an asteroid deposited it on the planet.
So chances are, “life” almost certainly exists, but evolved to the point of sentient life is probably astronomically small.
