Vor kurzem hatten wir unsere Tochter. Und ich habe dieses Dokument heute bekommen. Beachten Sie, dass meine Frau noch nicht in Deutschland gearbeitet hat. Und wir stammen aus Land der 3. Welt. Was bedeutet es?

This letter is about how parents can earn pension rights in Germany while raising their child. Even if they haven’t paid into the pension system before, they can still get benefits for taking care of their child.
For the first three years of a child’s life, one parent can be covered by the state pension system as if they were earning a monthly salary of about 4,200 euros. This helps them build up pension rights for the future.
Usually, the mother automatically gets this benefit. If the father (or a same-sex partner in a registered partnership) wants to claim it instead, both parents need to agree and submit a joint statement. This decision can even be made retroactively, but only for the last two months.
For their future pension, it is important how much a person paid into the pension system. They also need to work a certain amount of years to get the full pension without any deductions.
If they stay at home to raise a child, the first three years are handled as if they were working AND earning the German average income. Contributions to the pension system are paid by the state.
For the next 7 years, no contributions were paid, but those years still count as worked.
All this applies even if they did not work before.
By default, the person is the mother of the child.
There are some rules to that, but this is what this letter is about.
