Go and read the science fiction book Altered Carbon. It’s about exactly this. What happens when it’s possible to live for ever (even protecting against death by accident murder), but only for the ultra rich.
If we are debating versions of future from science fiction movies I prefer the version of future presented by Star Trek, where wealth is distributed equally and everybody profits from the advances of science
there’s no comfort in an unlimited lifespan if all that’s left is a carcass (with or without fresh organs transplanted off clones or whatever physical rejuvenation is *feasible* with the exception of the central nervous system) with three forms of dementia and a lack of ability to control one’s body and remember one’s self and memories
all known very long-lived individual organisms and their species are either simple enough that there’s no such a thing as chronic illness (physical or neurological/neuropsychological: usually microfauna, totally not humanlike but similar to *cell lines* used in research) or it’s some kind of shark or reptile (very dumb cold-blooded animal that sheds blood and other fluids in the open ocean) or a plant or some kind of colony (with no equivalent class of a physically aggregated organism like that applicable to people)
How about it’s already happening… sort of?
I suggest that we, mere mortals, have already produced composite organisms that are, potentially, immortal.
They’re called corporations—and they’re alive. They’re information-processing systems, and they perceive, they eat (raw materials, inputs, resources) and they excrete (products, pollution, money). Sometimes they mate and sometimes they reproduce. Even though it seems absurd, I just can’t nail down the definitive argument that convinces me that they’re not living entities. Yes, they’re partly built from other organisms (so are we) and yes, they have some components that are inorganic—so do we.
