    1. Am I the only who thinks that neutrality and higher spending on defence do not contradict each other? It seems perfectly reasonable to hold a neutral position but also ensure that we are securing a nation’s sovereignty.

    2. Given whats going on (full on war in Ukraine and the orange idiot destabilising the whole fucking world) I think this is a very necessary step. Do people not agree with this? Genuinely curious

I think anything Malta spends on its armed forces, beyond coast guard, anti-piracy, and other „policing in force“ type activities, is futile in terms of actually preventing an invasion if one were to occur. There are no nations of comparable size that are interested in invading, and other nations are so much larger than Malta it could never be a challenge if they were so inclined.

Any military spending Malta does beyond that has two functions. First, being part of a larger contingent in a coalition of allies. And second, demonstrate to those allies that Malta does not expect to be a purely passive receiver of military aid. These are both valuable functions, but they rely on being part of a larger military alliance to be of any value.

So yes, Malta should be spending money on its military. But it also needs to cultivate military alliances.

    4. personally i would prefer the money spent on improving home security due to the increase in population the police need more ,better trained resources . I read so ewhere over 20 police stations closed…

What have we gotten ourselves into ? What are we protecting ourselves from ?

All the countries which have ever attacked us are NATO members!

Screw Abela .. what we need is protection from the mafia state. The only Maltese murdered by a hostile state has been Daphne!

    6. Increase the military to now 20 guys and one truck! that will come handy if Gozo separatists get funding by Trump or something :p

    8. Is Malta part of Sky Shield? Would be interesting where the batteries would be placed.

ngl i think its futile if we increased our spending, bomb the marsaxlokk port and we would easily be starved to submission. Rather military alliances like the one we have with Italy could be much more effective cost and strength wise.

Moving away from neutrality just makes sure you are target. And joining the alliance comes with sharing the only advantage Malta has, being “unsinkable” and impossible to conquer meaning will end to be a deployment area for aircraft/ submarines from the big players. In top of making sure you’ll be a first strike target in a decade will loose any political and economical independence as everything will run around the foreign military base needs

If you think Malta changed past decade, just wait another to see it disappear completely

    11. Probably to defend himself from the fed up Maltese… another step towards dictatorship
