A fair and timely comment regarding LLMs such as ChatGPT: you can use them, such a task is exactly what they are invented for. But use them wisely.

The warning first: its a horrible idea to chug a prompt into ChatGPT and ask it to write the letter for you. Not only the letter will be terrible, you will not learn anything from the process, and the CompSci department WILL know it comes from a LLM and toss your application out. I imagine this is one of the main reasons they even want such a letter, to filter GPT-boys.

What you can do instead is to ask for some advice on how to write it. It can give you a list of 4-5 points that your letter should cover. Heck, you can even give your Reddit question to ChatGPT as a prompt and get a good answer. Then, after you have written the text, you can use it as a way to check grammar or to find synonyms to bad constructions. If you end up with 1086 chatacters, you can ask it to shorten the letter (but check the numbers yourself as it cant count, lol). But that’s all it should be used for: brainstorming and polishing existing text. But you definitely can use it for these tasks. After all, its a tool, if you can use it correctly, do so.
