      And will never make it out of Congress. But I hope he tires to run again in 2028 while the Republicans nominate someone else.

      He won’t be allowed on the ballot in most states and even the ones where he successful does make it on the ballot, will be challenged and hung up in the courts.

      SS: Republicans introduced a resolution to amend the Constitution, aiming to allow Trump to be elected to a third term. The 22nd Amendment currently restricts presidents to two elected terms. They argue that Trump’s leadership warrants an exception, stating, „He is dedicated to restoring the republic and saving our country, and we, as legislators and as states, must do everything in our power to support him.“ 

      It would require a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate, followed by ratification from at least 38 states. 

      Trump has hinted at the possibility of serving more than two terms. 

      But even if it doesn’t pass, Trump will change the US in irreversible ways. For example, Biden kept the tariffs. Not to mention what Trump did to the Supreme Court and complete overhaul of institutions underway. And the torch will be passed to individuals like Vance and others who are even worse. A new era? Trump may be the last of the moderates rather than the first of extremists.

      Not really geopolitics, but there is no realistic method for this getting out of congress, let alone to the states for votes.

      Trump has much of congress cowed to the point they disregard the oath they took to uphold the Constitution.

      Americans deserve this. I hope it happens and Trump wrecks that country forever. We’ll have global instability for 20 years but at least I won’t have to hear from that place again.

      Even if this fails to pass, it’s hardly why it’s a big deal. The very notion that someone would introduce such a bill is (or should have been) extremely problematic. These people intend to normalize this extremism to continue to push the line. If that line even exists anymore.

      How can anyone watch this man speak like a complete imbecile day in and day out, and then have the gall to say something like:

Andy Ogles of Tennessee, who proposed extending the current maximum of two elected terms.

      The entire GOP has to be gaslighting us right? None of this undying admiration makes sense

      Why not accept an amended amendment- three terms, any president. Would be fun to see Obama run against Trump.

      Now realistically this will never pass, but what it will do is show Trump who is loyal to him and who are his enemies. It also lays the groundwork for future attempts, by laying the seeds now he has 5 years to convince enough people to change the constitution and given his following I think it’s very much in his abilities.

      It won’t happen. Amending the Constitution is *really* hard. It would never get out of Congress. Hell, it would be hard-pressed to get out of the House. This is virtue-signaling to show fealty to Trump.

      Even if by some miracle it passed the House, the Senators would have a real challenge on their hands. Enough of the Republicans would vote against it. Wouldn’t make it past the filibuster.

      *Then*, it would need to be ratified by the state legislatures. Again, very difficult to do.

      All the while, he’ll still keep doing damage domestically and abroad.

      Won’t survive the house I don’t think but we’re in like week 2 of 4 years of probably trying to achieve some manner in which Trump can have a 3rd term.

      This attempt at a third term will surely fail, for reasons mentioned in other parts of this thread. *However*, they are playing the long game here, taking baby steps, getting the idea into people’s heads and, ever so slowly, making it mainstream. 

      Remember: the anti-vaxx community was small and ignored. They were laughed at. But eventually the idea spread and is now accepted as truth by many. Why can’t the idea of a president (aka dictator) for life follow the same path? 

      The idea that “it would never happen here” makes us complacent. We are frogs, slowly being boiled alive.

      Pointless posturing done to get favorable attention from Trump or the media. It’s like Democrats pushing strict fun control laws when Republicans have a majority or Republican pushing an Obamacare repeal when Democrats had the power to stop it.

      Pointless bills like these get introduced all of the time and go nowhere. We’re just going to hear about all of them for a while because views and clicks mean ad revenue for the media.

      Lets put aside the fact that this has no chance of passing.

      Angela Merkel was the Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021 and no, nothing happened to Germany’s democracy.

      It doesn’t matter if someone gets elected 2 times, 3 times or 5 times. What matters is the functionality of the institutions. And we’ve seen it time and time again that institutions are not functioning properly and are vulnerable. They can be swayed into being pro-democrats or pro-republicans.

      Combine this with the fact that US has almost become an oligarchy, you can see the disaster looming on the horizon.

      Sure Trump is not going to fix this and possibly make it worse but this is hardly anything Trump started.
