The Intel researchers‘ driving focus, they write, is sustainable laptop production, which goes hand in hand with the right-to-repair movement. This movement enables future users to repair and upgrade their machines without being penalized by technology companies through restrictions on getting components or tools to make the repairs.
I guess nobody is old enough to remember when this was just how laptops worked. It’s kind of pointless IMO because because the improvements are always incremental and by the time they are significant enough all the standards have moved on and you have to upgrade everything anyway.
I personally think internal connections should also be reformed for desktops, and generally new internal connection standards should be made. Seasoned PC builders might laugh at me but putting in new RAM and GPUs into the respective slots is too finicky, let alone replacing CPUs and CPU coolers, and there is too much danger of destroying the motherboard. It would be so much easier to build and upgrade PCs if internal connections where more like external ones, maybe some standards with clamps and an audible click. I even like ethernet connections as long as you don’t step on them and the little plastic thingy breaks.
