    1. Cheap, allows for visibility, keeps animals out/in and is a bit more unobtrusive than non-green coloured ones.

That being said, I hate it with a passion.

I don’t have any fence. Nor does my neighbor and their neighbors, too.

My friends in another town have a chain link fence and their neighbors have a trellis-work fence.

I cannot remember when I have seen this type of fence.

    3. It is very durable, you can instal it yourself (did it myself and i have two left hands), not much tools are needed.

    4. By the way, they are called „Doppelstabmattenzaun“, which means ‚double rod mat fence‘.

Doesn’t need maintainance (like wooden fences), is flexible, easily constructed, cheap and you can even upgrade it with „Sichtschutz“ so nobody can see you 🙂 I wonder why it’s not common in other countries

Additional to all thr other comments – it doesn’t change a lot over time. Wooden fences become ugly very quickly with weather. These ones just stay the same level of semi-ugly.

Relatively inexpensive, you can assemble it yourself, easy to dismantle again, easy to clean, robust, timeless…in short: practical

Cheap, effective, low-maintenance, all of which makes it a popular choice for new builds and when people need to replace a fence.

For maximum Germanness, it should have plastic strips printed with an ivy or brick pattern woven through it.

    9. It’s functional and most importantly relatively cheap. I find these things ugly as sin and wouldn’t want one. But I will have to redo our fencing in the coming years and if I google what it will cost I’m beginning to understand…

    10. We have these around uk schools, the old chain link fences were so easy to climb, these not so much, unless you have birds feet or something, they are also quite tough even though they don’t look it

    11. I think it’s the spiritual successor of Maschendrahtzaun, which plays an important role in german neighborhood disputes, which are an essential part of german tradition and history. Attn: Don’t look it up on youtube, risk of brain damage.

I think I’ve never seen a fence that I liked. So this isn’t worse than anything else. At least the colour is nice.

    13. Community Order or local Development Plan, might only allow a certain height, size, colour or version of a fence

Because the Maschendrahtzaun was quite a thing back in the days for inclosing larger areas, but people wanted to evolve, in terms of security, practicality even scalability.
Those are quite sturdy and come with options like additional plastic sheets being kind of „woven“ into the fence for privacy reasons and combining fences with „Gabionen“ for example. There are very flexible systems, to which we usually refer as „echt praktisch“.

I hate this fence. Especially the version with the plastic strips.
      * It stands for the message: leave me alone. Neighbours don’t talk to each other. If they are old, they will complain about loneliness. It’s so stupid.
      * It’s perfect for burglars. It’s easy to see in and easy to get past, but it’s better for the burglar to hide themself.
      * The plastic strips stink in summer – it’s disgusting.
      * The fence is no obstacle for cats in any variant. Cats easily going across.
      * When walking or driving past quickly, you can still see everything inside. As a snapshot.
