TL;DR – While AI often hallucinates as a content creator, it could be effective as a content organizer. By summarizing various perspectives and triangulating facts across multiple news outlets, AI might help us get closer to the truth on a given story.

No, not in the slightest. AI is damaging enough as is, trusting it to deliver real and proper news is like trusting a bear to not eat you while wearing a shirt made of steaks.
First, the USA must fix the politician problem of telling people that the news industry is wrong or „fake“. Then, the followers of said politicians will eventually stop parroting the same thing
Making up news is supposed to restore confidence? Reporting the actual news would go a long way, and I doubt this has any intention to do that.
Rich people are both buying up news sources to make them biased towards their point of view, and propagating the idea that news sources (esp. the ones they don’t own/can’t buy) are untrustworthy. Witness Musk’s attack on Wikipedia, for example. So I don’t know why AI would help.
Yeah, makes sense that an American populace that doesn’t trust the news media would only trust an AI. /s
Face it, the people with media literacy problems only want to hear what they believe parroted back to them. Anything short of that they won’t trust because they don’t watch news for objective reality. They watch news to have their beliefs reinforced.
We do not have news any longer. It’s entertainment. And the business is selling advertising, not being a news source.
I really wish we would stop throwing AI as the answer to everything that’s broken. Half of the problems we have were brought about by algorithms used to extract maximumbshott term revenue at the expense of sustainability.

It is ludicrous to suggest that AI (a technology that has, thus far, been used to produce deceptive but plausible slabs of text) can be anything except a problem for good faith public discourse. AI is flooding communication media with garbage that’s increasingly hard to distinguish from actual journalism.
